Papal Tweets

  • “To experience #Lent in hope means receiving the hope of Christ, who gave his life on the cross and was raised by God on the third day, and always being prepared to make a defence to anyone who calls us to account for our hope (1 Pt 3,15).” @Pontifex 18 March 2021
  • “To experience #Lent in hope means receiving the hope of Christ, who gave his life on the cross and was raised by God on the third day, and always being prepared to make a defence to anyone who calls us to account for our hope (1 Pt 3,15).” @Pontifex 19 March 2021
  • “Saint Joseph is an outstanding example of acceptance of God’s plans. May he help everyone, especially young people who are discerning, to make God’s dreams for them come true. #Vocations Message” @Pontifex 19 March 2021
  • “To be a good father means to offer everything, holding nothing back; to protect without suffocating; to pardon without asking anything in return; to wait patiently and trustingly. It means following the example of the ”Good Father“ who is in heaven. May God bless all fathers!” @Pontifex 19 March 2021
  • “Each day that begins, if welcomed in #prayer, is accompanied by courage, so that the problems we have to face no longer seem to be obstacles to our #happiness, but rather appeals from God, opportunities for our encounter with him. #WorldHappinessDay” @Pontifex 20 March 2021
  • “Racism is a virus that quickly mutates and, instead of disappearing, goes into hiding, and lurks in waiting. Instances of racism continue to shame us, for they show that our supposed social progress is not as real or definitive as we think. #FightRacism #FratelliTutti” @Pontifex 21 March 2021
  • “Every child who a woman expects in her womb is a gift that changes a family’s history: the life of fathers and mothers, grandparents and of brothers and sisters. That child needs to be welcomed, loved and nurtured. Always! #WorldDownSyndromeDay” @Pontifex 21 March 2021
  • ““Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit” (Jn 12:23–24). Precisely then, in trials and in solitude while the seed is dying, that is the moment in which life blossoms, to bear ripe fruit in due time” @Pontifex 21 March 2021
  • “For us believers, “sister water” is not merchandise: it is a universal symbol and is the source of life and health. Many brothers and sisters have access to too little and perhaps polluted water. It is necessary to assure potable water and hygienic services to all. #WorldWaterDay” @Pontifex 22 March 2021
  • “How many times have we told the Lord: “Lord, I will come to you later… I can’t come today. Tomorrow I will begin to pray and do something for others”. In this life, we will always have things to do and excuses to offer, but right now is the time to return to God. #Lent” @Pontifex 23 March 2021
  • “May we not let this time of grace pass in vain, in the foolish illusion that we can control the times and means of our conversion to the Lord! #Lent” @Pontifex 23 March 2021
  • “Today is World #Tuberculosis Day. May this annual event foster a renewed interest in the treatment of this disease and increased solidarity toward those who suffer from it.” @Pontifex 24 March 2021
  • “I am near the people and the families affected by the major floods that have caused serious damage in New South Wales in Australia, especially those who saw their houses destroyed. #PrayTogether” @Pontifex 24 March 2021
  • “I learned with sorrow the news of the recent terrorist attacks in #Niger, which caused the deaths of 137 people. Let us #PrayTogether for the victims, for their families and for the entire population.” @Pontifex 24 March 2021
  • “Mary was and is present in these days of the pandemic, near to the people who, unfortunately, have concluded their earthly journey all alone, without the comfort of or the closeness of their loved ones. Mary is always there next to us, with her maternal tenderness.” @Pontifex 24 March 2021

White-knuckling Lent

by Jeffrey Miller March 23, 2021April 9, 2021
written by Jeffrey Miller

If Lent was 2-3 weeks long I would make a much better Lent.

That is about the time span I feel I am making a good Lent. Although if Lent was 2-3 weeks long I would probably feel that I make a good Lent for 1 and a half weeks.

This is probably because I am making Pelagian Lents. White-knuckling through on my own efforts. Not giving this time of preparation to Jesus to transform me. I hate annoying insights about myself.

Dark Night

by Jeffrey Miller March 17, 2021May 26, 2021
written by Jeffrey Miller

I am going through a phase where I do not feel close to Jesus at all.

Yet I am super-interested in philosophy, theology, liturgy, etc.

I guess I am going through a Dork Night of the Soul.

My joke has a grain of truth as far as it goes. I have never had a pietistic emotional attachment to Jesus. More of an intellectual attachment to Christ. One that only grows in my certitude. I would like it if my emotions lined up with my intellect (such as it is), but still am filled with thankfulness and gratitude to where he has brought me so far. So being too abstract intellectually is a cross for me, especially as I read the various Carmelite saints.

Requiescat in Pace Jean Heimann

by Jeffrey Miller February 24, 2021April 9, 2021
written by Jeffrey Miller

Sad news indeed to hear of Jean Heimann’s passing.

Posted on her blog Catholic Fire today

Aug. 8, 1949-Feb. 21, 2021

The founder of this blog, Jean M. Heimann, has gone on to her eternal reward. After suffering rapidly declining health following the death of her beloved husband, Jean died on Sunday, February 21, 2021, at the age of seventy-one years. Of your charity, please pray for the repose of her soul.

Those who have appreciated the work Jean put into this blog for many years, those who have appreciated her books, as well as those who knew Jean are invited to leave a tribute on this memorial site. There you can also find details of her funeral, scheduled for Friday, 26 February 2021, in Wichita, Kansas.

This blog will remain online as a lasting memorial to Jean. Those who have enjoyed the inspiration and information provided here may also like to read Jean’s books (click title headings for link to Amazon):

She was one of the early Catholic bloggers, starting Catholic Fire in 2003. In those early days there was a lot of support and encouragement among Catholic bloggers and she encouraged me and many others.

She is also the author of serveral books including Learning to Love with the Saints: A Spiritual Memoir. She will be missed dearly.

  • “On the #WorldDayOfTheSick special attention goes toward those who are ill and to those who assist them. I think especially of those who suffer the consequences of the #coronavirus pandemic. I express my nearness to everyone, especially to the poorest.” @Pontifex 11 February 2021
  • “Those who put arms into the hands of children instead of food, books and toys commit a crime not only against the little ones, but against all of humanity. #ChildrenNotSoldiers” @Pontifex 12 February 2021
  • “#Radio has this beautiful trait: it carries the word to the most distant places #WorldRadioDay” @Pontifex 13 February 2021
  • “Each of us might experience wounds, failure, suffering, selfishness that make us close ourselves off from God and others. In the face of all this, Jesus draws near with compassion and touches our life to heal it. #GospelOfTheDay” @Pontifex 14 February 2021
  • “May the intercession of Saints Cyril and Methodius, evangelizers of the Slavic people, help us find new ways to communicate the Gospel and that the Christian churches grow in their desire to walk toward full unity while respecting differences.” @Pontifex 14 February 2021
  • “We are created to love and through the conjugal union of a man and a woman, this vocation is lived reciprocally and in complete and definitive communion of life. On this memorial of St Valentine, I accompany engaged and married couples with my prayer.” @Pontifex 14 February 2021
  • “May the Lord inspire everyone to draw near to those who suffer, especially children, and to put the weakest in first place. I entrust the doctors and all sick children to the Virgin Mary so that with her mother affection she might look after them. #ICCDay” @Pontifex 15 February 2021
  • “To understand God’s plan for our lives better, let us seek to strengthen our relationship with Him through #Prayer. Thus we will discover that God is a compassionate Father who always takes care of us” @Pontifex 15 February 2021
  • “Let us pray together today in memory of twenty-one Coptic Martyrs: may they intercede for us all before the Father. Video Message” @Pontifex 15 February 2021
  • “This haste, this everything right now, does not come from God. If we get worked up about the right now, we forget what remains forever: we follow the passing clouds and lose sight of the sky.” @Pontifex 16 February 2021
  • “During this season of #conversion, let us renew our faith, draw from the “living water” of hope, and receive with open hearts the love of God, who makes us brothers and sisters in Christ. #Lent
    Message” @Pontifex 17 February 2021
  • “We are now embarking on our #LentenJourney, which opens with the words of the prophet Joel. They point out the path we are to follow. We hear an invitation that arises from God: “Return to me with all your heart” (Joel 2:12). Lent is a journey of return to God.” @Pontifex 17 February 2021
  • “Today we bow our heads to receive #ashes. #Lent is a humble descent both inwards and towards others. It is about realizing that salvation is not an ascent to glory, but a descent in love. It is about becoming little. Homily” @Pontifex 17 February 2021
  • “Let us return to the Holy Spirit, the Giver of Life, to the Fire that resurrects our #ashes. Let us pray once more to the Spirit and rediscover the fire of praise, which consumes the ashes of lamentation and resignation. #Lent” @Pontifex 17 February 2021

Fish Sandwich Insurance

by Jeffrey Miller February 16, 2021May 26, 2021
written by Jeffrey Miller

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen is offering “insurance” for its flounder sandwich. If the flounder doesn’t suit customers’ palates, then they can replace it with chicken. The Cajun-seasoned flounder filet, which will be a contestant on our upcoming fish sandwich review, is expected to be a staple of the Popeyes menu for the six weeks leading up to Easter.

The insurance option is only available on Thursday, February 18 (and only when purchased through the Popeyes app). The idea is that those who are going meatless on Friday can test out the flounder on Thursday. Since no one would want a fish sandwich replaced with chicken on an abstinence day, they are only offering the promotion for one day. The insurance costs 15 cents, which should still keep the sandwich under $5.

Sacramental Delivery Service

Canadian diocese offering ‘take home’ containers for Ash Wednesday

After seeing this story I am thinking of getting into the sacramental delivery business. A business where people could have sacramentals such as ashes delivered directly to their homes.

I will call it DoorAsh.
