Erik Richtsteig May 10, 2007 - 10:07 am A friend of mine always asks about vestments like this, “Ummm, excuse me father. Which liturgical color is that?” Reply Londiniensis May 10, 2007 - 10:38 am That’s not a stole – it’s his college scarf, surely? Reply Romulus May 10, 2007 - 10:46 am Left his chasuble in the sanctuary, perhaps? Reply joanne May 10, 2007 - 10:58 am well, it is attractive. Reply suaso! Reply Nancy May 10, 2007 - 12:23 pm I don’t think it tops one I saw on a priest at our Chrism Mass this year (not my priest, thankfully), but it sure comes close. Reply Cpt Tom May 10, 2007 - 2:39 pm I’m more concerned with the text that goes along with it: “Father Steve Niskanen opens the door of Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church for illegal immigrants facing deportation, including Juan (L), holding his daughter, and religious leaders from different congregations during the public launch of The New Sanctuary Movement in Los Angeles, May 9, 2007. (Danny Moloshok/Reuters)” Figures it’s LA…but this kind of stuff is just wrong. This is “social justice” run amok Reply MissJean May 10, 2007 - 2:57 pm That’s not a stole. It’s an unfinished serape. Reply MM from Brooklyn May 10, 2007 - 4:11 pm Does he also run the AIDS ministry? Reply Ubi_deficiunt May 10, 2007 - 4:42 pm In other news, Bill Gates celebrated his acquisition of the Roman Catholic Church by introducing the new “Windows” stoles. Gates managed once again to trump Steve Jobs and Apple, who had just acquired the Anglican Communion. Reply AJ May 10, 2007 - 8:06 pm But at least he is ALWAYS wearing the correct liturgical color. LOL…kalej, good to see there’s still some optimists in the Catholic blogosphere Reply Sarah May 11, 2007 - 9:52 am Have you seen the one that looks like a tapestry of childrens’ (multicultural) faces? Reply cjmr May 11, 2007 - 12:53 pm Have you seen the one that looks like a tapestry of childrens’ (multicultural) faces? Yes, but only on a Lutheran pastor who’d adopted several mixed-race children. For her, that is an appropriate stole. Reply Fr. Steve May 12, 2007 - 1:24 am Glad you like my technicolor stole, and can understand if it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. I received it as a gift. I don’t wear it for Sunday or weekday Mass, but for this occasion of an ecumenical prayer service in support of immigrant parents in danger of separation from their children, it seemed appropriate. Many colors symbolizing that we are all God’s children. Many colors symbolizing that God is at work in many Christian and non-Christian faith traditions, and continues to call us to welcome Him in the stranger, the alien who lives among us. By and large, people migrate here because they have no hope or livelihood in their place of origin. My ancestors migrated from Finland way back when, also for economic reasons. Let’s have as much compassion as we can, while also working hard so that the goods of our earth may be more fairly distributed. Let’s take to heart the words of Pope John Paul II who decried the increasing economic disparity between the North and the South. May God bless you all and please pray for me! Fr. Steve Niskanen, CMF Our Lady Queen of Angels, Los Angeles Reply David Delaney May 12, 2007 - 6:40 pm Fr. Steve – you wouldn’t have graduated from Balboa High School, C.Z. in the late 70’s would you? Reply Paul Nichols May 12, 2007 - 8:24 pm Um, I dunno, but that looks awfully like the Rainbow Flag colors to me. I would wonder about a priest who wears that sort of thing. Especially in pro-gay LA. I’m just sayin’. But I’ll wager that the good father’s ancestors “migrated” legally. Big difference. Reply Londiniensis May 12, 2007 - 9:13 pm Prayers for you and your parish this Sunday, Father Steve. Reply John J. Simmins May 16, 2007 - 10:36 am Fr. Steve: I know. I know. I got a tie like that for fathers day, once. Gotta wear it every once in a while….
