Santa Fe-AP) — A national religious organization is protesting the College of Santa Fe’s choice of commencement speakers.
The college has invited veteran newsman Hugh Downs to address graduates and their parents on May 15.
The Cardinal Newman Society says Downs stated in a 1999 article, “repressive abortion laws do little except work a hardship on the poor.”
The group says it’s dedicated to the renewal of religious identity in Catholic higher education in the United States.
It argues schools are “scandalizing students and impeding the church’s aggressive efforts to end legalized abortion.”
College President Linda Hanson says the group’s comments must be viewed in light of what that group represents and that her school is honored to have Downs as a speaker.
What that group represents? Could that perchance be orthodoxy and faithfulness to the church? I guess Linda Hanson’s comments must be viewed by what this school represents. Judging by their web site it would take some investigation to find that this college has any association with the Catholic Church. Only their history page would tell you this. “In 1966 the name of the school was changed from St. Michael’s College to The College of Santa Fe to show the close rapport between the school and the city it serves.” I guess the name change reflects the not close support between it and the Catholic Church.
