Animal Friendly Bible Translation

by Jeffrey Miller March 27, 2011March 27, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

Via Creative Minority Report

(Gothamist) — After they heard that the latest translation of the New International Version of the Bible will now use gender- inclusive language such as “he or she” instead of just “he”, PETA saw an opportunity to change one other thing.

The organization has petitioned the Committee on Bible Translation to suggest that its next translation remove ”speciesist” language, by referring to animals as “he or she” instead of “it.”

You just have to wonder if perhaps they didn’t read the book of Leviticus or really many parts of the Old Testament. Yes just before the blood sacrifice and offering the animal as a burnt offering we should refer to the animal as she or he. Yeah that’s the ticket.

“If his gift for a burnt offering is from the flock, from the sheep or goats, he shall offer a male without blemish; and he shall kill it on the north side of the altar before the LORD”

Now the Petafied version.

“If his gift for a burnt offering is from the flock, from the sheep or goats, he shall offer a male without blemish; and he shall kill her on the north side of the altar before the LORD.

Wow that is so much less speciesist. Here is another Petafied verse.

And the priest shall bring it to the altar and wring off its head, and burn him on the altar; and his blood shall be drained out on the side of the altar; and he shall take away his crop with the feathers, and cast it beside the altar on the east side, in the place for ashes; he shall tear him by his wings, but shall not divide it asunder. And the priest shall burn him on the altar, upon the wood that is on the fire; it is a burnt offering, an offering by fire, a pleasing odor to the LORD.

Surely they can not object to that language. A pleasing odor to the Lord – man I want some Bar-B-Que now!

I would have more respect for PETA if they just condemned the whole Bible instead of playing games like this. The view of scripture just is totally opposite to that of PETA and animal sacrifices were a shadow of Jesus the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. He was not the Asparagus or Tofu of God.

Saintly Sisters

by Jeffrey Miller March 27, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

Here is a worthwhile new family business that specializes in making dolls of sisters with habits from specific orders.

While I am partial to the Carmelites as shown above  they also currently have Sisters of Life, Holy Spirit Adoration Sister, Apostolic Sister of St. John, and Sister of the Visitation.  Personally I would also like to see a doll for the Dominican Sisters of Mary.

Saintly Sisters

Since this is a family business faithful to the magisterium you won’t see nuns dressed in polyester pant suits with sensible shoes.

Code of Canon Law Eastern/Latin

by Jeffrey Miller March 27, 2011March 18, 2013
written by Jeffrey Miller

I was asked to help with taking a PDF document of the Eastern Code of Canon Law and creating a eBook version that was fully indexed so that the you could click within the table of contents to go to that section. I was able to do that using open source programs called Calibre and Sigil. I was then asked to do the same with the Code of Canon law for the Latin Rite. That was a bit more difficult considering I didn’t have the full text that was the same as the version on the Vatican’s web site. I didn’t want to use the abbreviated version I had since if I was going to do this I wanted to do it right. So I parsed through the English version on the Vatican’s web site to build the eBook and to index for the Table of Contents as I went.

Having finished that I thought it was probably a worthwhile resource for other so I am making it available for download for anyone to use.

The eBook versions can be nice to use since most eReaders let you easily highlight content and create notes along with providing searching of the full text. On the iPad both the Kindle App and the iBook App provides a very nice search in that it shows the search term within a sentence for context. Though you don’t have to have an eReader and there are book reader apps for the PC/Mac. For example Amazon has Kindle apps for these platforms, but it is rather crippled since it is missing search and the ability to create notes.

ePub: 1983 Code of Canon Law

mobi (Kindle): 1983 Code of Canon Law

ePub: Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches

mobi (Kindle): Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches

* Note: For Kindle users to upload these ebooks from your computer. You can 1. Email it to your Kindle address, 2. Upload it via the USB cable, 3. Use the open source program Calibre to upload it to your device.

Atheist Pride Week Part 2

by Jeffrey Miller March 23, 2011March 23, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

In Jennifer Fulwiler post referenced in my first post below on this subject she wrote.

I’ll leave it to the Archbolds to come up with some witty suggestions for how one might celebrate A Week (watching reruns of NOVA and gathering ‘round a wreath that is decidedly symbolic of nothing, perhaps?).

Despite the fact that she referenced my comrades at Creative Minority Report instead of yours truly, I must throw in my reply to this question. CMR’s response is here.

1. First off while NOVA would be perfectly respectful for Atheist Pride week, I would place instead another show. “Cosmos” with one of atheists favorite atheists Carl Sagan. Though Carl Sagan didn’t like the term atheist and called himself more of an agnostic. Regardless atheists would canonize him just for his phrase “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence” which has so often been used by atheists.

2. Replay the following Steve Martin video each day of Atheist Pride Week. “Atheists Don’t Have No Songs”

Now while I am a fan of Steve Martin and think his Twitter feed consistently funny I would object to the contention “Atheists Don’t Have No Songs”. What about the Atheist Anthem written by John Lennon “Imagine.” Really this should be sung before all atheist events with you hand over your forehead (brain instead of heart). Plus there are a plethora of nihilist songs riding the air waves.

3. Go to a famous art museum and explore the beauty of paintings of Grand Masters and statues created by atheists. Oh wait – they were pretty much all believers. Well instead go to a museum of Modern Art almost totally devoid of beauty.

4. Have an Atheist Pride Parade. You don’t have to organize one, just let millions of years pass and one will evolve.

5. Join an atheist book club and read Christopher Hitchens “God is not great” and discuss how religion poisons everything while wearing Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot t-shirts.

6. Petition your local city council to be able to have a primordial swamp placed next to the Christmas Nativity scenes and Menorahs in the city park.

7. Have a Flying Spaghetti Monster Dinner Fundraiser for local atheist groups. The Flying Spaghetti Monster is such an excellent idea as an argument and have converted thousands of Christians to atheism. Well maybe only a thousand Christians, or perhaps a hundred, or maybe a couple though this was a well though out argument. Mockery always works to convince people.

8. Argue with believers about why there is no such thing as free will in a materially deterministic world. Because getting people to change their will and accept that there is no free will involves no contradictions whatsoever.

9. Go door to door in your neighborhood convincing others to become atheists. After all the joy that when you die that’s it and that good and evil are only society changing terms should get them to repent of belief in ultimate truth. Plus religion is an opiate that must be stopped, oh and afterwards you can get back to your drug legalization campaign.

10. Let people know that atheists can be good people. Just because we can’t define what good is and that again it is relativistic and defined by societal mores and getting along. Atheist can be good people even if atheist have to rely on a Christian’s definition of good.

11. Troll a Catholic blog because angry atheists full of venom always works in persuading Catholic bloggers about the truth of atheism. For myself I find getting cussed out by an atheist wants me to immediately reject the idea of a loving God.

Atheist Pride Week Part 1

by Jeffrey Miller March 23, 2011March 23, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

Jennifer Fulwiler offers another excellent article, this time on Atheist Pride week that is worth reading about the dangers of embracing an identity involved with being what you are against.

Pride events seem to me as odd considering pride comes before the fall. Whether it is Gay Pride or Atheist Pride embracing pride is rather strange since no one lists it when it comes to virtues. Though generally atheism leads to pride – or at least how I lived atheism. A group that likes to be known as Brights or Free-thinkers doesn’t place humility high on the list.

In my case I felt a superiority over those masses of people who believed in a sky-father and needed to look beyond science for answers. I rather pitied such people who were still living in the Dark Ages intellectually and needed a wake-up call to an age that had put man on the Moon. I was not shy about my atheism and had no problem identifying myself as such. When the Navy asked me my religion to mark down on the forms once I joined I was happy to say Atheist and have it marked as such. I would love to engage believers and argue about their belief if given an opportunity. Growing up in Portland, Or I wasn’t given much opportunity to do so. Really most of my life I was surrounded by atheists or practical-atheists. The fact that there are quite a lot of people who say they believe in God yet lived as if he didn’t exist certainly added to my pride. If I drank as much as them and fornicated as much as them I was still smarter than them because there was no hypocrisy in my actions – so I believed.

Now as a Catholic I can hardly feel pride for being a Catholic in that it was not of my doing and certainly not a directed choice. There is a humility in recognizing that faith is pure gift and that while you must cooperate with it, grace led to even that cooperation. Though during the initial part of my conversion I had some pride in it being an intellectual conversion in that I had read myself into the Church. Later though I saw the foolishness of that and once again trying to take pride in what was a gift. Thankfully God keeps sending me plenty of ways of becoming humble when I try to take pride in intellectual ability.

I also find the need for Atheist Pride week interesting. Changing your Facebook profile to one where you wear a shirt with a big “A” on it or take pictures of yourself with a sign saying you are an atheist is a strange turn in the atheist movement. It seems more and more atheist want to be given acceptance and they are increasingly playing the victim card. Being offended right and left over reminders on government property that belief in God exists seems to me contrary to atheist pride. A happy atheist should be able to have self-esteem in their philosophy without getting upset when you see signs of other people’s belief. If you are really a truth seeker and accept atheism because you find it to be true, what is the point at getting upset when others don’t do the same? After all whether you are an atheist or a believer when you die you both just stop existing regardless. The so-called “New Atheists” that act this way I would adapt H.L. Menken’s famous quote.

“Atheism – the haunting fear that someplace, somewhere, there might be a cross on a City seal.”

One atheist didn’t get the memo about Atheist Pride Week.

Atheist activist Dr. Michael Newdow announced on his website that after 6 years of litigation in federal courts, his constitutional challenge to the Pledge of Allegiance in California public schools is “over.

I was once proud to be an atheist, now I take some pleasure in being an ex-atheist and the Joy I have come to find. So if you have a profile picture with a shirt with an ‘A’ on it or a sign identifying yourself as an atheist I would be happy to pray that you come to the same joy that I have. That joy that another ex-atheist C.S. Lewis described in his book “Surprised by Joy.”

In part two I take a more humorous take on this.

A Thought Experiment

by Jeffrey Miller March 21, 2011March 21, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

New York, NY. He goes to NAACP meetings, though not every time. He considers himself a practicing NAACP Member, yet avoids calling himself devout. He opposes racism, as NAACP leaders do. But he supports skinheads. And he supports slavery and owner’s rights which at odds with NAACP teaching.

In other words, Gov. Andy M. Cuomese of New York shares the habits and social views of a growing number ofself-hating African-Americans who have identified themselves as NAACP members in recent surveys.

But now that he is the governor, the everyday complications of Mr. Cuomese’s NAACP identity have become a lightning rod in a decades-old culture war between traditional NAACP and those, like Mr. Cuomese, who disagree with the organizations positions on various issues, including slavery and racial quotas.

Just how fierce that struggle remains became evident last week, when online criticism from a NAACP lawyer led to an awkward impasse that threatened to derail the governor’s first official meeting with the NAACP leadership.

Mr. Cuomese understands the order of battle as well as anyone: His father, Mario M. Cuomese, the New York governor from 1983 to 1994, delivered a seminal speech at the University of Notre Dame in 1984 that laid out the moral argument that politicians affiliated with NAACP have used ever since to justify being personally opposed to slavery while supporting a owner’s right to choose.

Still, it is an uncomfortable position for a son steeped in NAACP’s agenda. Andy Cuomese was raised in a Queens household where NAACP members and the leadership were guests at dinner. His father’s favorite books were by NAACP members.

[Article being parodied]

Now with this little thought experiment if such a situation actually existed, nobody would bat an eye if the NAACP threw out a member that supported such evil. If they told him that his membership was revoked until such time as he recanted his position, again nobody would have a problem with this. Generally in any organization if a member opposed the goals of that organization in a flagrant and public manner people would not be surprised if major action was not taken to correct that person. If such a person showed up at a meeting, his being shown the door would be seem to match right reason.

Yet when it comes to the Church we are not suppose to say a peep if one of our brothers is endangering their soul. Scandal, so what. Being a politician of the right secular beliefs trumps any criticism of religious observance. We are not allowed to follow Catholic doctrine in regards to the Eucharist and the danger of someone receiving it in a state a grave sin. We are not even allowed to talk like John the Baptist who criticized Herod’s irregular marriage as is the case of Gov. Cuomo’s adultery and public concubanage. Well I guess we still are allowed to talk like John the Baptist, it is just that the media wants our head when we do so.

The title of the NYT piece made no sense at all. “A Cuomo Who Is Catholic but Hardly Theological.” To be a Catholic is to hold a theological position. The only real reason to be Catholic is to believe the Catholic faith is true and to hold her theological positions as truth. Being a member of the Catholic Church is not like being a fan of a sports team because your father was and cultural Catholicism is that empty.

Courtyard of the Atheists

by Jeffrey Miller March 19, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

VATICAN CITY, 18 MAR 2011 (VIS) – In the Holy See Press Office at midday today, the presentation took place of the “Courtyard of the Gentiles”, an initiative by the Pontifical Council for Culture which will involve two days of meeting and dialogue between believers and non-believers in Paris, France, on 24 and 25 March.

Participating in today’s press conference were Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, president of the Pontifical Council for Culture, Fr. Jean-Marie Laurent Mazas F.S.J., executive director of the “Courtyard of the Gentiles”, and Stanislas de Laboulaye, French ambassador to the Holy See.

Cardinal Ravasi explained that “at the request of Benedict XVI the Church has decided to embark on a new stage of dialogue, exchange and joint activity among believers and non-believers. This has been entrusted to the Pontifical Council for Culture”.

The name “Courtyard of the Gentiles” evokes “the image of the vast area near the Temple of Jerusalem reserved for debates between Jews and non-Jews”, the cardinal said. “It complements inter-religious dialogue which has been going on for some decades and represents a long-term commitment of the Church which will interest many people in the world, believers and non-believers alike”.

“The aim”, Cardinal Ravasi continued, “is to help to ensure that the great questions about human existence, especially the spiritual questions, are borne in mind and discussed in our societies, using our common reason”.

Simply this is awesome and of course part of the engagement that the Church and especially Pope Benedict XVI represent. Not really for the so-called “New Atheists”, but for men of good will seeking the truth.

The president of the pontifical council went on: “That symbol of apartheid and sacral separation which was the wall of the ‘Courtyard of the Gentiles’ was cancelled by Christ. He wished to eliminate barriers so as to ensure a harmonious meeting between the two peoples. … Believers and non-believers stand on different ground, but they must not close themselves in a sacral or secular isolationism, ignoring one another or, worse still, launching taunts or accusations as do fundamentalists on one side and the other. Of course, differences must not be skimmed over, contradictory ideas must not be dismissed, or discordances ignored, … but thoughts and words, deeds and decisions can be confronted, and even come together”, he said.

Relations between Christians and Gentiles “can follow the paradigm of a duel”, the cardinal concluded, “but what the ‘Courtyard of the Gentiles’ wishes to propose is, by contrast, a duet. A duet in which the sound of the voices may be at antipodes – such as a bass and a soprano – yet manage to create a harmony without renouncing their own identity; in other words, … without fading away into a vague ideological syncretism”.

A duet not a duel – I love that.

The inaugural session of the “Courtyard of the Gentiles” will take place on the afternoon of 24 March at the Paris headquarters of UNESCO, presided by Irina Bokova, director general of UNESCO, and attended by diplomats and representatives of the world of culture

written by Jeffrey Miller

Catholic Trailers is a new blog promoting Catholic videos. Zachery Brakefiels who is currently working for producing book trailers for Saint Benedict Press & TAN Books has produced a video for todays Feast for St Joseph. I must say I am very impressed by the quality of this video which seems to me pitch perfect. This is exactly the type of professionally produced Catholic media we need to promote.

Catholic News Live

by Jeffrey Miller March 19, 2011March 19, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

Long time Catholic blogger Jeff Geerling deserves lots of congratulations this year. First he got married, then he produced an inovative iPhone app for his Diocese of St. Louis, and now he has produced a new iPhone app – Catholic News Live.

Catholic News Live presents a news feed containing Catholic News from traditional news sources, Catholics blogs, etc. Find a story title you are interested in – click on it to go to the story.

If you like a story and want to share it with others you can easily send it to Instapaper, Twitter, Facebook, Email and other services like Read it Later, Google Reader, etc. You can even go to a map showing world locations of stories.

This is a solid app and well worth the .99 cents.

Note: If you are unfamiliar with Instapaper or Read it Later – these are services where you can send articles to read them at your convenience. They are also reformatted so that they are easier to read and content such as ads, banners, etc are removed. I use Instapaper all the time on my Mac and iPad and it really helps me to save and read stories I am interested in and then have a archive of this content.
