A Biblical Walk Through the Mass.

by Jeffrey Miller May 25, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

A Biblical Walk Through the Mass: Understanding What We Say and Do In The Liturgy is a new book by Edward Sri that does dual duty as both an overview of the Mass and a introduction to new English translation of the Mass.

There are a lot of books on the Mass and most of them concentrate of the Liturgy of the Eucharist or focus on the mass via some lens.  This book is more general in that it goes through each part of the Mass and gives a solid overview and touching on theology in a way that will open the Mass to more people.  While doing this it touches on how the new translation effects the Mass and explains why the new translation is better and exactly how it more descriptive of the spiritual realities going on at Mass.

I found it to be a good read in that it helped me focus better on different parts of the Mass and give more meaning to parts of the liturgy I had not concentrated as much on before.  The audience for this book I judge to be fairly wide and an exception introduction to the Mass for teens and above. Perfect for RCIA and others forms of formation.

The review book I received came with a short booklet that answers questions on the new translation and provides a nice cheat sheet of changes.

Triggering the same bits of brain

by Jeffrey Miller May 24, 2011May 24, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

We’ve been waiting for the TTOE the Theological Theory of Everything that can explain both religious belief and Apple fanboyism.

In a recently screened BBC documentary, UK neuroscientists suggested that the brains of Apple devotees are stimulated by Apple imagery in the same way that the brains of religious people are stimulated by religious imagery.

…According to the neuroscientists, the scan revealed that there were marked differences in Brooks’ reactions to the different products. Previously, the scientists had studied the brains of those of religious faith, and they found that, as Riley puts it: “The Apple products are triggering the same bits of [Brooks’] brain as religious imagery triggers in a person of faith.”

“This suggests that the big tech brands have harnessed, or exploit, the brain areas that have evolved to process religion,” one of the scientists says. A meeting with the Bishop of Buckingham, who reads the Bible using his Apple iPad, appeared to back up this assertion. He pointed out how the Apple store in, for example, Covent Garden has a lot of religious imagery built into it, with its stone floors, abundance of arches, and little altars (on which the products are displayed). And of course, the documentary doesn’t fail to give Steve Jobs a mention, calling him “the Messiah”. [Source]

This explains everything. When I was an atheist I was a Windows user and an Apple hater. When I came to have faith in God the dendrites in my neurons were redirected enabling faith and subsequent susceptibility to Apple fanboyism.

Actually stories of this type just numb me with blasts of stupidity and craptastic assumptions. Materialistic reductionism of this type reminds me of the John Cleese video where he poses as a professor pointing at different parts of the brains and saying things like “This part of the brain is where the belief in .. comes from” and finally pointing again to and saying “This is the part of the brain where we get the idea that this part of the brain.

MRI Scan shows the triggering of the same bits of brain as religious subjects thus Apple is a religion. Wonder what bits of brain causes you to come to that stupid conclusion.

Disconnect

by Jeffrey Miller May 22, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

Long time blogger Elena has an excellent post on Sean and Carolyn Savage ,the Ohio couple that gave birth via IVF to a baby that was not biologically theirs after the fertility clinic accidentally placed embryos from another mother into Carolyn’s uterus.  Fortunately they did not abort the child and claimed their Catholic faith was instrumental in that decision while at the same time not seeing the disconnect with the Church teaching about IVF.  Her post covers their bishop’s general statement on this and their overreaction to it and just how far off their are from understanding basics of their faith.

The Space Pope

by Jeffrey Miller May 21, 2011May 21, 2011

The Space Pope – Futurama

The Space Pope – Present Day

In a first for The Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI called to the heavens on Saturday — but instead of reaching God, he spoke to two Italian astronauts and their 10 colleagues working on board the International Space Station (ISS).

“Dear astronauts, I am very happy to have this extraordinary opportunity to converse with you during your mission and especially grateful to be able to speak to so many of you as both crews are present on the space station at this time,” said the Pope, reading in English from prepared remarks. [Source]

In the meantime I am reading Dan Simmon’s series the Hyperion Cantos that as part of the plot has the Vatican existing on a planet called Pacem and the Swiss Guard are the elites of the elites in military combat.  Though theological elements are not exactly orthodox.

Sister Sarah Butler appointed a consultant to new Vatican office

by Jeffrey Miller May 21, 2011May 21, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI chose two women religious from the United States to be consultants to the Pontifical Council for Promoting New Evangelization: Sister Sara Butler, who teaches theology at the University of St. Mary of the Lake Mundelein Seminary in the Archdiocese of Chicago; and Sister Mary Lou Wirtz, the Rome-based president of the International Union of Superiors General.

Glad to see Sister Butler’s appointment. She has been part of the Vatican’s International Theological Commission. In 1978, she headed a task force of the Catholic Theological Society of America that came out in support of female priests. Later though further study she realized the errors of her previous support of women’s ordination and wrote a book called The Catholic Priesthood and Women: A Guide to the Teaching of the Church. I was impressed favorably with her book that went point by point against all the arguments in favor of women’s ordination and refuted them quite well.

Last blog entry before the Rapture – Not

by Jeffrey Miller May 20, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

The president of Family Radio, Harold Camping, prediction that the Rapture will occur tomorrow May 21, 2011 is getting a lot of commentary and the question is does R.E.M feel fine.

I’ve noticed that a lot of the commentary on the social networks and new sites is predominantly of the secular “look at those crazy Christians” variety. That Camping’s views are pretty much lumped together with all Christians. People have also had much fun with the idea of the Rapture as popularized by the Left Behind series. Though I doubt most realize that the idea of the Rapture is certainly not universal among Protestants and of course totally alien to Catholics and the Orthodox. Of course the Rapture is rather a modern idea invented by John Nelson Darby a Irish Lawyer and the father of dispensationalism later popularized by Scofield.

That Camping’s prophecy is mocked is not surprising and of course much of that criticism comes from Christians. The end of the world chicken littles are nothing new and often should be smiled at and laughed about. That Camping has made a previous prediction makes is more laughable and of course there was the Edgar Whisenant best seller on why the Rapture would occur in 1988, and not surprisingly he sold less copies when he subsequently predicted it in 1989. These types of false prophets are laughed at and of course they have no credibility.

Now if you want to be a false prophet and predict things that never happen and not only keep your credibility and even get a high paying job you need to be a environmental prophet. No matter how badly you off in predicting the future, it doesn’t matter as your latest prophecy will seem just as credible to many people.

For example President Barack Obama Science Advisor John P. Holdren predicted the “great die-off” for the 1980s. Oh well we all make mistakes. In 1986 Holdren predicted “carbon dioxide-induced famines could kill as many as a billion people before the year 2020. Just two years ago when queried on this:

Vitter: So you would stick to that statement?
Holdren: I don’t think it’s likely. I think we should invest effort – considerable effort – to reduce the likelihood further.

Vitter: So you would stick to the statement that it could happen?
Holdren: It could happen, and …

Vitter: One billion by 2020?
Holdren: It could.

Talk about faith.

Modern critics have noted his role in Paul Ehrlich’s famous wager with Julian Simon: Holdren chose five metals that he believed would be more expensive in ten years’ time due to scarcity, while Simon predicted each would be less expensive. A decade hence, Ehrlich’s group was $1,000 poorer (a chance to reduce their carbon footprint, perhaps).

Or how about Rachel Carson who wrote the book Silent Spring which was the death knell for millions who subsequently died of malaria? Lets forget about that bit of science prophecy and concentrate on Harold Camping.

  • A 1990’s textbook said “some scientists estimate that the world’s known supplies of oil, tin, copper, and aluminum will be used up within your lifetime.
  • Harrison Brown, a respected member of the National Academy of Sciences, published predictions in Scientific American in 1970 which estimated that humanity would totally run out of copper by 2000, and that lead, zinc, tin, gold, and silver would all be gone by 1990.
  • Paul Ehrlich, famously predicted in his best-selling book The Population Bomb: “The battle to feed all humanity is over. In the 1970s the world will undergo famines; hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death in spite of any crash programs embarked upon now.”
  • Ehrlich, in an article entitled “Eco-Catastrophe” in The Progressive magazine, offered a scenario in which four billion people would starve to death between 1980 and 1989, 65 million of whom would be Americans.
  • “Within a few years “children just aren’t going to know what snow is.” Snowfall will be “a very rare and exciting event.” in the year 2000 Dr. David Viner, senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia
  • “[By] 1995, the greenhouse effect would be desolating the heartlands of North America and Eurasia with horrific drought, causing crop failures and food riots…[By 1996] The Platte River of Nebraska would be dry, while a continent-wide black blizzard of prairie topsoil will stop traffic on interstates, strip paint from houses and shut down computers.” Michael Oppenheimer
  • “By 1985, air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half.” Life magazine, January 1970.

And the list of faulty environmental predictions go on and on and on and yet retain secular credibility.  Certainly there is a double standard among false prophets so if you are going to be one be a environmental false prophet.

Sex au Naturel

by Jeffrey Miller May 15, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

For a long time one of the few popular resources on the truth about contraception has been Dr. Janet Smith’s talk “Contraception, why not.” Now we can add another resource to that arsenal. “Sex au Naturel: What It Is and Why It’s Good for Your Marriage” by Patrick Coffin is thorough review of the subject for the popular audience.

I really like this book in that it totally told the truth about contraception, but not in manner that will make people who might being using contraception or had themselves sterilized simply stop reading. The book is filled is many short chapters that help the reader by providing the proper background so that they can understand the theological distinctions required. So for example a review on the natural law is given.

Also given is the modern historical context related to how contraception came to be accepted in modern times and the role that Anglicanism provided in putting that crack in the dam that made the constant teaching of Christianity through the time of the Protestant reformer to now to run aside from the truth. The groundwork for wide acceptance of the pill was mainly laid in the 1930s, but had been building up. Pope Paul VI “Humanae Vitae” was a shock to both Catholics and the general public who had generally expected a shift by the church on this especially regarding the leaks from the group that had advised the Pope on this. The aftermath of this was quite messy especially since this was the flowering of so much dissent and bad theology. This history the book provides on this encyclical is intriguing.

One thing that makes this book so good is that Patrick Coffin was himself once a dissenter growing up in a environment in Canada that encouraged such dissent from the Canadian Bishops Conference on down. The second chapter gives a short version of his conversion story and how it was the encyclical itself “Humanae Vitae” that started his change when he took the effort to actually read it. Given this background it helps him to understand the information that others need to know to understand this teaching.

The contraceptive mindset is one that has taken on much force yet most people don’t think much about their beliefs on this subject. To my detriment I once accepted the whole culture of death philosophy regarding children. The environmental and population hysteria of the seventies led me to many errors in belief and after having one son and one daughter I had myself sterilized at a relatively young age. I even publicly joked on the subject that having one of each I had bagged the limit and I was done. Not only that I encouraged a coworker to do the same and he did. In a list of worst things I have ever done this sterilization pretty much topped the list, but it was only as I was approaching the Church did I realize the extent of my folly and the attitude that went behind it. This book addresses such sterilization’s and why they are wrong and ways for regretful Catholics to atone for this as to the possibility for some of surgical reversals or other suggestions. I certainly had not idea of the various side-effects listed in the book and the disclaimers I signed for surgery at a Naval Hospital did not mention many of them. The spiritual side-effects are much worse.

The book also goes into the subject of IVF and other aspects of what happens when you separate sex from procreation. The subject of NFP vs. Contraception is also covered quite well and this is important since so many people get hung up on these distinction which they group as one thing. I just haven’t read anything that covered the whole topic as well and from multiple angles as this book. I think it will be extremely helpful for those who have fallen into lie of contraception to understand why it is indeed a lie and for faithful Catholics who want to have some good arguments to use in speaking with others on the subject.

For those such as myself who quite appreciate Patrick Coffin’s humor as host of Catholic Answers live you will be happy to find some of his humor in this book, but it is not intrusive and more effort is made for providing solid content than into cracking jokes. An excellent read that I hope makes it into the hands of many people.

WTH

by Jeffrey Miller May 11, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

Tom at Disputations asks “What the hell is the matter with Republican Catholics?” Because both parties have their favorite intrinsic evils that must be supported with few exemptions on either side. When the party faith collides with the Catholic faith we get another “Catholic” politician and another “Catholic” faithful who defends the politician as to why an intrinsic evil is not really an intrinsic evil.
