More than 100,000 Britons have recently downloaded “certificates of de-baptism” from the Internet to renounce their Christian faith.
The initiative launched by a group called the National Secular Society (NSS) follows atheist campaigns here and elsewhere, including a London bus poster which triggered protests by proclaiming “There’s probably no God.”
“We now produce a certificate on parchment and we have sold 1,500 units at three pounds (4.35 dollars, 3.20 euros) a pop,” said NSS president Terry Sanderson, 58.[reference]
Lame! If they want to do it right they need to do what Julian the Apostate did. He baptized himself in bull’s blood to be de-baptized. Sure that is just as inffective as an internet certificate, but it at least shows commitment.

Julian had himself bathed in a bull’s blood in a Mithraic rite, which would probably cost more than a few pounds, plus the stern disapproval of PETA. And there is much difference between bullblood and bull&^%$.
I may have to track down a source for bull’s blood and post the number next to my work phone. Just so I can, like, help…the next person who submits his unbaptism paperwork. Some people think this is preposterous, but this sort of thing has crossed my desk!
If a teleevangelist (or a Medieval Dominican for that matter) did something like this, the folks over at NSS would be ridiculing the buyers for their dim-wittedness, and accusing the sellers of fleecing the simple.

I wonder what worthy cause those $435,000.00 could have been spent on instead? Protecting the rainforest? Reducing carbon emissions? Funding children’s hospitals?
No, it was spent on a juvenile gag to make a few people feel special about nothing. They are an embarrassment to all atheists, religionists, and humanity itself, and their wasteful ways won’t be forgotten.
There’s only two occasions where I can imagine such a certificate being used for anything. Either (a) the bearer is under the scrutiny of a government or group which is persecuting Christians and he wants to escape accidental martyrdom, or (b) it’s Judgment Day. I don’t see it doing him a lot of good in either case.
This is so sad. It breaks my heart to witness this.

It simply amazes me that the church is failing in the Western world.
Maybe this news will wake up those who do have faith in Christ and give them impetus to put to work what they believe.
This is a real quandry for those de-baptism candidates, or would that be un-catechumens, who have remained sinless since their baptism. And who have received sacramental absolution for each of the sins that they have committed since their baptism. It must be so difficult for your really devout secularists to remain stained these days.
The should simply formally renounce their allegience to the Catholic Church via the canonical process, as flawed as it may be according the Dr. Peters, and be done with it.
Apparently these people are so discontented that no level of decency will satisfy them. It is not surprising.
Sorry, I just realized, I think, that most are from the Church of England. I don’t know what they should do.
