He once mentioned that he has more in common with more conservative protestants than he does with many Catholic liberals. They’re both still true. Reply Dano April 13, 2007 - 10:21 pm The irony is enhanced by the fact that her arguments and rhetorical flourishes are the exact same ones once used by nativists, Know-Nothings, and anti-Catholic bigots in the 19th century. If I had the time and the stomach to go searching through speeches by protestant anti-Catholics in the 19th century, I’ll bet I could find many phrases almost exactly mirroring those used by Ms. Jacoby.
