Transcript of a recorded message by Cardinal Mahony on California’s Prop 85. [Via Ad Altare Dei]
The text of Cardinal Mahony’s recorded message: Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As you may know, under current California law a minor girl under the age of 18 cannot leave school to go on a field trip, she cannot get a flu shot, a tooth pulled, or even an aspirin from the school nurse without one of her parents being notified.
Yet that same child — a girl as young as 12 years old — can be taken by a complete stranger to an abortion center, put under general anesthesia, and undergo a surgical or chemical abortion without her parents’ knowledge or consent.
This is why I urge you to support, work for and vote YES on Proposition 85, the Parents’ Right to Know and Child Protection Initiative, on Election Day, Tuesday, November 7th.
Proposition 85 requires a physician to notify at least one parent 48 hours before performing an abortion on a girl under 18 years old.
Parents have a duty to protect their own children. Engaged in the raising of their daughter, parents have insight into what is best for their children; they know her personal and medical history. Parents are the best ones to help a minor daughter understand all her options if she becomes pregnant. Without parental involvement, other influences can dominate.
Parental notification laws are desperately needed to protect young girls.
Here is another vital reason you and I should vote YES on Proposition 85 on November 7th: secret abortions on minors allow the exploitation of tens of thousands of vulnerable girls, leaving them physically and emotionally devastated.
More than thirty states now have parental notification or consent laws, and these states have seen a dramatic drop in teen abortions AND teen pregnancies as a result of this change in the law. Here in California, the Office of the Legislative Analyst estimates that parental notification would reduce the number of abortions in our state by 25% per year.
So please vote YES on Proposition 85 on November 7th. And please do all you can to promote this crucial measure, and urge your family, friends and neighbors to do the same.
I hope you will join with me in praying daily, from now until the November elections, that voters will strongly support Proposition 85.
Thank you, and may God bless you and your family!
First off bravo to Cardinal Mahony and I hope his message is heavily promoted. It would be nice though if he also were to stop having such a cozy acquaintance with heavily pro-abortion politicians who have had events in the L.A.
Similar legislation was narrowly defeated last time so all that can be done to push this over the edge is sorely needed. I do think that 25% is overly optimistic considering that there are still exemptions via the court and so-called medical emergencies. The bill though does seem to have some teeth in cases where the law is bypassed or the consent of the minor girl has been coerced.
In related news Cosmos-Liturgy-Sex reports on a Florida State University study on parental consent laws.
The researchers found that teen gonorrhea rates dropped by an average of 20 percent for Hispanic girls and 12 percent for white girls in states where parental notification laws were in effect. The results were not statistically significant for black girls. The study will be published in an upcoming edition of The Journal of Law Economics and Organization.
“Incentives matter,” Klick said. “They matter even in activities as primal as sex, and they matter even among teenagers, who are conventionally thought to be short-sighted. If the expected costs of risky sex are raised, teens will substitute less risky activities such as protected sex or abstinence.”
In this case, the incentive for teens is to avoid having to tell their parents about a pregnancy by substituting less risky sex activities. In doing so, the researchers say, the rates of gonorrhea among girls under the age of 20 went down.

Thanks for the info! Thought you might like to know that there’s an official website for Prop 85. I have relatives in California working on this campaign. Even if you’re not in California, linking to their website helps with search engine placement and spreading the word. They’re SO underfunded compared with the other side.
God Bless!
Agree. Let’s give Cardinal Mahony credit where credit is due. However, this statement concerned
me:
“Parents are the best ones to help a minor daughter understand all her options if she becomes pregnant.”
I assume he believes that abortion is not one of those options.
What a great message! Who would have thought Cardinal Mahoney had it in him?
I don’t agree with Mahony too often but I am with him on this one!
Unfortunately, abortion is an option, and minor girls don’t need their parent’s consent to get one. Why shouldn’t parents help their daughters truly understand the option of abortion? It is killing their baby – they need to understand that, and they may not be hearing that from anyone else.
We call statutes against parental notification the “Sexual Predator Protection Act(s)”.
Most cases involving a minor seeking an abortion without notifying the parents involve an adult as the father.
I can’t believe my eyes! Cardinal Mahony said that?! Truly, something is afoot! LOL. Bravo, Mahony! At least you got something right!
I’m afraid I understand what Leah is saying. The Cardinal didn’t finish the message. He forgot to tell his flock that abortion is not an option.
