Consider “Sweet Mother of God,” Werner’s mosaic of the Madonna and Child done completely in Necco candy wafers. It was, Werner said, inspired in a less than divine way. Werner, who normally works in copper, wanted to do something different for the show. She considered creating a mosaic, but was put off by the cost of the hundreds of ceramic tiles.
“I was thinking about an alternative, when someone across the room shouted, ‘Sweet mother of God!'” Werner said. “I think they dropped a hammer on their foot. But that made me think about candy.”
She chose Necco wafers, those brittle, sandy candy disks that your grandmother liked, because they come in many colors and would be easy to work with. But she soon noticed something else.
“The candies are a lot like the wafers at Communion,” she said. “So there’s a lot of symbolism here.”
