THE of a Polish satirical weekly, Jerzy Urban, will go on trial on charges of insulting Pope John Paul II, the public prosecutor’s office said today.
Urban, a former spokesman for the Communist government during the 1980s, faces between three months and three years in prison if found guilty, the public prosecutor’s spokesman Maciej Kujawski said.
The founder and owner of the satirical weekly Nie, Urban published a story in his newspaper, entitled “Walking Sado-Masochism” and referring to the Pope, among other things, as an “impotent old man”.
The prosecutor says the article “transgressed the legal limits on freedom of speech and the standards of journalistic ethics, by using offensive expressions … with the aim of libelling and humiliating (the Pope)”.
Sen. Ba-ba Mikulski insults the Pope every day by her mere existence as a so-called “pro-choice Catholic.” Good thing she’s not Polish… hey, wait a minute…
