The Blessing of the Graves

by Jeffrey Miller November 3, 2020November 3, 2020
written by Jeffrey Miller

Last night I went to my parish’s blessing of the graves.

The main reason I started to attend this specific parish was that it is the only parish in the Diocese with its own cemetery. Thus this is where my wife is interred. It is such a comfort to be able to go to the cemetery after Mass to pray the Divine Mercy there. Since then I have come to love this parish along with the parishioners.

Originally I had intended to leave after the blessing since I had already gone to Mass in the morning. Ended up going to the Mass they had afterward to pray for my daughter.

At the end of Mass, they started calling out the names of parishioners who had died within the last year. Family members would then go up as a group to receive a candle. After all the names were called out we processed to the cemetery while we chanted the Litany of the Saints. After this, our Parochial Vicar prayed the Office of the Dead. This ended with us singing Salve Regina, which I am glad that I memorized last year.

This was really quite a wonderful experience and a chance to pray for others who have lost loved ones. I also loved the aesthetics of the nighttime walking out to the cemetery with candles while chanting the litany.

St. Edith Stein – Essays on Woman

by Jeffrey Miller October 27, 2020October 27, 2020
written by Jeffrey Miller

Edith Stein Essays On Woman (The Collected Works of Edith Stein Book 2)

Since I am reading through her collected works, this is the second volume from ICS. I did not know quite what to expect regarding these essays.

I found that I very much enjoyed her perspective on the dignity and vocation of women. This was written partly in the context of the feminist movement of her time and her own experience as an academic and teacher. These essays were written before she became a Carmelite nun.

It is such an enjoyment to go deeper into a topic you had not gone deep into before. Her discussion on the feminine soul, women’s vocations (broad use of vocations here), and their education brought out many points I had not dwelled on before. Some of the distinctions she made I was generally aware of, but this put them much more into focus.

This hits on many of the tensions we are seeing today now that education is focused as if girls/boys, men/women are simply interchangeable with no modification as to teaching method or other distinctive. There was a lot of material to reflect on here and so much of what she has to say is valuable generally. I wish I could adequately summarize these essays since I feel they would be useful beyond an academic context and in the home in regards to the education of girls and their nurturing.

Really, a lot to ponder within these essays, and I just haven’t given them the justice they deserve. Her deep understanding of the nature of women and what she had to say in this regard, I found useful and thought-provoking.

Obedience is efficacious

Obedience is efficacious

by Jeffrey Miller October 15, 2020
written by Jeffrey Miller

“Previous experience teaches that, in order not to lose the right way in the midst of such spiritual dangers, there is no better protection than obedience toward an enlightened religious director. It is a mysterious fact that obedience is efficacious against the powers of darkness—as is God’s unique mercy in placing such a guide at the side of an afflicted soul—but it is a fact.”

St Edith Stein Essays On Woman (The Collected Works of Edith Stein Book 2)

Reading this today on the Memorial of St. Teresa of Avila I of course immediately thought of how much she would have agreed with this.

Just one of the many things I love about St. Teresa was her obedience and her willingness to literally throw her writings in the fire if so ordered so. In fact, she did just this regarding her reflections on the Song of Solomon. It was only because her nuns had managed to keep copies of it that we have it today.

I just recently read through her collected works again and I only love her more. Obedience to those over us is the training of the will to be able to be more obedient to God. Obedience to human superiors is difficult, especially when we believe they are wrong.

Often we just want to be obedient when we are already 100 percent on board with something. This causes no training in humility.

Obedience to God seems even more difficult despite knowing that he loves us and will only give us the good we need, we somehow still think we know better.

In “The Way of Perfection” St. Teresa writes

“fiat voluntas tua: Your will, Lord, be done in me in every way and manner that you, my Lord, want. If you want it to be done with trials, strengthen me and let them come; if with persecutions, illnesses, dishonors, and a lack of life’s necessities, here I am; I will not turn away, my Father, nor is it right that I turn my back on you. Since your Son gave you this will of mine in the name of all, there’s no reason for any lack on my part. But grant me the favor of your kingdom that I may do your will, since he asked for this kingdom for me, and use me as you would your own possession, in conformity with your will.

Way of Perfection

I wish I could actually practice this and not just write about it.

Father Farley’s Triple Blessed Holy Water

by Jeffrey Miller October 13, 2020October 13, 2020
written by Jeffrey Miller

I happened to come across this item at Etsy

Father Farley’s Triple Blessed Holy Water is the ultimate Holy Water you can obtain! Blessed by 2 Priests and 1 Cardinal from the Archdiocese of Chicago/Roman Catholic Church. This holy water contains water obtained from Lourdes France as well as triple blessed holy salt. It’s 100% pure and safe for any and all uses. Even the 100% Aluminum bottle is triple blessed! Every bottle has a locking spray top which allows you to quickly spray a fine mist and then lock it so it doesn’t spray/leak into your purse or backpack. Everything was thought out with the utmost care to make sure that this holy water will get you through the toughest of times all the while vanquishing evil in any form! It’s great for getting rid of those pesky monsters under my kid’s bed and in the closet! I just spray it when I hear my daughter yell, then she tells me where the monster is, then I spray it away! Never had one even get close to her yet! Shipping is FREE!

NOTE: A PORTION OF THE PROCEEDS FROM THIS HOLY WATER GOES TO THE CATHOLIC CHURCH (ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO/CATHOLIC CHARITIES). THEY REALLY NEED OUR HELP IN THIS TIME OF NEED! THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS.

The write-up for this is somewhat humorous as also is the packaging. As a gag gift, I would have no problem with it and the theology of it is meant to be over the top.

Now the selling of supposedly blessed items and sacramentals, as far as I know, doesn’t contravene Church law such as in the case of selling relics.

My caveat would be the “NOTE:” which I would suspect that what it implies is fraudulent. This seller also sells a liquid that makes pregnancy tests pop positive as a joke.

Update: The seller is not joking about providing a contribution to the Church based on sales. I asked him about this and he seems quite serious about this and I accept that. Nice to be wrong about this.

My Appearance on “Hands On Apologetics”

by Jeffrey Miller October 13, 2020October 13, 2020
written by Jeffrey Miller

Last Friday I was on Gary Michuta’s radio show “Hands On Apologetics”.

As I was already a fan of Gary’s books I had been listening to his radio show via podcast since it first came out. He has an interesting format that is not just another apologetics call in show. Each show he starts by discussing either a logical fallacy or a propaganda technique and then discusses an early Church Father or early ecclesiastical writer. The majority of his show he talks with a guest on a variety of apologetics topics. He really has a great range of guests, many who have been very influential to me.

So it was a thrill to be invited on his show to talk about my conversion and a bit about how blogs and podcasts have been contributing to apologetics.

If you are so inclined to can listen/watch this show via MP3 and YouTube.

You can subscribe to his podcast via this RSS directly or simply search for Hands on Apologetics in your favorite podcast player.
