Part II

by Jeffrey Miller October 20, 2007
written by Jeffrey Miller

This is quite refreshing. Rev. Peter J. Daly who was one of two participants in an article on the TLM that seemed to be quite disparaging has replied:

I’m sorry,

… On conservative Catholic blogs my name has been mud. I have been called everything from a heretic to a fool.

I’m sorry if I offended anyone. And it may surprise my correspondents, but I actually agree with many of them.

My previous column was a failure for two reasons. First, it did not convey my own affection for the old liturgy. Second, it did not recognize the good motivations of the people who want a return to the Latin liturgy.

Instead of attacking the messenger and writing off bloggers and others as cranks he goes on to give I think a much better analysis of why some love the extraordinary form of the Mass.

Now if only we can get him from calling it the Latin liturgy and the Latin Mass.

I do wish he would have corrected the many inaccuracies his original column and characterization of a neighboring parish (St. Francis deSales) with the TLM. Fr. Daly had personally apologized to the pastor of this parish and reportedly promised to put out a retraction. The new column has an excellent tone generally in reference to followers of the TLM, but does not make any mention of the parish he previously maligned. Though I don’t want to go on an on about this and am glad that Fr. Daly has written this column.

I don't think the court has jurisdiction

by Jeffrey Miller October 19, 2007
written by Jeffrey Miller

MADRID – DPA – The Spanish judiciary has for the first time recognized the right of a Catholic to stop being a member of the church, radio reports said Thursday.

The National Court sided with a person who had taken the Valencia archbishop’s office to court for refusing to cancel his baptism certificate.

The archbishopric had argued that baptism certificates were not files that could be cancelled and that they did not prove a person’s ongoing membership in the Catholic Church.

The archbishopric’s refusal violated the complainant’s rights to protect personal data and his religious freedom, the court said, adding that it was legitimate for him to leave a record showing he did not consider himself a member of the Catholic Church.

Removing a indelible spiritual mark is not exactly easy and you just can’t go to even a dry cleaners to do it. Last I knew judges didn’t have the ability to remove an ontological change. I guess he needs to look around for John the Debaptizer.

Julian the Apostate took a novel approach to try to become unbaptized – he bathed in bath of bull’s blood.

What is this phenomenon?

by Jeffrey Miller October 19, 2007
written by Jeffrey Miller

When I saw this at Heart, Mind & Strength I thought surely this was a joke. But it is Comonweal.

Two very bright and very balanced graduate students at my university (one a former columnist for “Commonweal”) have told me that they are home-schooling their children, which leads me to wonder what information is available about this phenomenon, which, I think, is now some twenty or thirty years old–who are choosing to home-school? why they choose to do it? what have been the results? the effects? what state-regulations govern it, if any? Etc., etc.

Has “Commonweal” published anything on it?

Planned Parenthoods own statistics prove them wrong

by Jeffrey Miller October 19, 2007
written by Jeffrey Miller

Matt C. Abbott posts an article by Bill Beckman, current executive director of the Illinois Right to Life Committee.

‘A headline in the October 15th Chicago Sun-Times reads, ‘Planned Parenthood is not the enemy in abortion fight.’ Such a statement could have come straight out of Planned Parenthood’s own marketing plan. Unfortunately, the facts do not support the perception Planned Parenthood wants to create with this marketing message.

‘In 2006, the Guttmacher Institute (research arm of Planned Parenthood) rated the states on the effectiveness of their state-funded birth control distribution programs. States such as New York and California were rated excellent while Nebraska was rated poor. Which of these states do you think have high abortion rates? Remember, Planned Parenthood claims that better access to birth control will reduce abortions. Well, New York and California are among the states with the highest abortion rates while Nebraska has low abortion rates. Thus, Planned Parenthood’s own statistics demonstrate the failure to achieve their claimed results.

‘In 2005, the Guttmacher Institute, in a study on unplanned pregnancies, noted that 53 percent of women who have unintended pregnancies used a contraceptive method during the month they got pregnant. Of those unplanned pregnancies, 47 percent end in abortion, 40 percent are carried to full term, and 13 percent end in miscarriage. Whether this is due to usage failure or method failure, it shows that artificial contraception is largely ineffective in preventing unplanned pregnancy and abortion.

Priesthood Sunday

by Jeffrey Miller October 18, 2007
written by Jeffrey Miller

Every year, thanks to an organization called Serra International, the last Sunday of October is designated as "Priesthood Sunday." People are invited to pray for their priests and to honor them in various ways.

At Priests for Life, we have decided to observe this day by having a novena for priests, starting this Friday, October 19. Go to www.priestsforlife.org, and you’ll see the link at which you can download the special prayer.

When you do so, you will also have the opportunity to send me:

a) Your prayer intentions. What priests should we pray for in a special way? Are there some who have health problems; are there others who need a special dose of courage?
b) Your stories. Tell me about your favorite priest, or how a priest or pastor inspired and strengthened you in your own walk with the Lord.

Lying bullies

by Jeffrey Miller October 18, 2007
written by Jeffrey Miller

Asked about reaction he had received, Archbishop Niederauer expressed concern about the impact of Web logs, or blogs.

"The blogosphere is a kind of dangerous, endless recess in a global schoolyard," he said, "where the bullies with the biggest bullhorns can shout whatever they want."

There is of course some truth in this, but these kind of comments are exactly the type of defensive ones used by people who are forced to react to something. Bloggers almost always are dismissed as always being in the extreme camp – I guess bullies in pajamas seems to be the dominant charge. No thanks is ever given when a some scandalous event is posted on and attention brought to bring it to an end. There have been a large range of reactions to this event with some of them quite uncharitable towards the Archbishop, but the implication that bloggers are just bullies who can shout whatever they want is not exactly charitable either with this implication of lying.

Catholic punditry is a potentially dangerous sport and we must always examine our consciences when we post and to be quite careful about what we say. I know I don’t want the first words from Jesus to me upon my death to be "About that blog of yours…" Sometimes it can seem that we can be quite happy reporting on scandals within parishes such as Most Holy Redeemer of the infamous St. Joan of Arc. Though speaking for myself and probably for the majority of Catholic bloggers, I would be quite happy to be reporting on positive changes in these parishes or not posting on them at all.

Jesuit Father Donal Godfrey, one of the Mass concelebrants, said the way the two men were dressed was “disrespectful to religious sisters,” but he said he felt “it probably wasn’t their intention (to offend.) They knelt in all the right places. They stood in all the right places. Except for the way they were dressed, they weren’t doing anything disrespectful.”

Fr. Donal Godfrey is normally good for a good laugh. "Except for the way they were dressed" is quite a funny line if you take it that way. Except for mocking the habits of Catholic religious orders and receiving Communion in objectionably grave sin they weren’t doing anything disrespectful.

Update: American Papist has some solid commentary on comments made defending MHR and the Archbishops comments on blogs.

Sen. Brownback out

by Jeffrey Miller October 18, 2007
written by Jeffrey Miller

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Sen. Sam Brownback, the Kansas conservative who struggled to raise money and gain recognition in the 2008 presidential campaign, will drop out on Friday, people close to him said Thursday.

Money was a main reason for his decision, said one person close to Brownback who requested anonymity because the candidate had not yet announced his plans. Brownback is expected announce his withdrawal in Topeka, Kan.

It’s widely anticipated Brownback will run for Kansas governor in 2010, when his term — his second — expires. He had promised in his first Senate campaign to serve no more than two terms.

Well this is certainly no surprise. He has run a campaign that makes Katherine Harris’s Senate campaign in Florida look inspired. I will though be sad to see him leave the Senate after his current term since he has been for the most part an excellent senator, and probably the most pro-life senator there currently is and also one who is the best on social issues.

Overblown

by Jeffrey Miller October 18, 2007
written by Jeffrey Miller

A reader sent me the following story.

SAN FRANCISCO (CNS) — Reaction to San Francisco Archbishop George H. Niederauer giving Communion to two men in mock nuns’ garb during an Oct. 7 Mass has been overblown, said the pastor of the church where the Mass was celebrated. "It is most unfortunate this incident has clouded the fact the archbishop came to meet with his people and celebrate a beautiful and reverent Mass together — and that is what really happened," said Father Stephen Meriwether, pastor of Most Holy Redeemer Parish. "This incident has been blown way out of proportion," he told Catholic San Francisco, the archdiocesan newspaper. Reaction has run the gamut from some who insist the "sisters" had set out to embarrass the church and the archbishop to others who felt the unannounced visitors who videotaped the Mass were more of an intrusion than the costumed men.

Last year after the sex toy bingo at Most Holy Redeemer hit the news Fr. Meriweather was said to be placed "on leave" by the archdiocese. This bingo being held in the parish hall was also run by
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. After all the hoopla died down Fr. Meriweather returned to the parish. Earlier this year the BBC broadcast what turned out to be prayer service (or in reality a homosexual pep rally) at MHR by Fr. Donal Godfrey, S.J. who said about homosexuality" It’s simply another gift from God who created us as rainbow people." Every year MHR has maintained a presence at the areas gay pride events and the parish web site has shown pictures such as men kissing.

Countering

by Jeffrey Miller October 17, 2007
written by Jeffrey Miller

Dawn Eden as part of The Cardinal
Newman Society
and in
cooperation with St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Worcester Diocese?s
Respect Life Office will be speaking.  This will be on the eve
of Holy Cross having a conference with representatives from Planned
Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts.

In her talk, Miss Eden will detail
how Church teachings on chastity offer a solution to not only the
problem of teen pregnancy but also the wider problems of family
breakdown — while abortion, contraception, and other
“solutions” offered by Planned Parenthood and their allies exacerbate
those problems. She will also place the issue, in accordance with
Church teachings, into the context of what steps Catholic colleges can
and should take to promote Catholic values on life, love and sexuality.

This event is open to the public and The Cardinal Newman Society
encourages a strong showing of support for Bishop McManus?s principled
stand.

Bishop McManus has been great on this
and there is some chance that he will act on the provision of Canon Law
808 in regard to the university calling itself Catholic.

Deal Hudson has some commentary on this
aspect and the history of the document signed in 1967 at the Land
O’Lakes Conference that set the stage for the false autonomy from the
Church that is so prevalent.

My two cents is that if the school doesn’t start going down the right path that they should change their name from Holy Cross to Double Cross.
