Really quite shocking

by Jeffrey Miller April 6, 2011April 6, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

Lord Rees of Ludlow, the Astronomer Royal and former President of the Royal Society, was named as the recipient of the annual Templeton Prize in London as two British Nobel laureates denounced his decision to accept it.

Lord Rees was a surprise choice for the accolade because, while he has made major contributions to understanding the nature of the Universe, he is an atheist and does not believe that God played a role in its creation.

He told The Times that he believes in a peaceful coexistence between science and religion.

“It is perfectly possible to have religious beliefs and be a scientist,” he said. “I’m just not someone who does.”

But a roll call of prominent scientists reacted with dismay, claiming that the Templeton Foundation seeks to blur the boundary between science and religion and to promote faith in the absence of evidence.

Professor Sir Harry Kroto, a Fellow of the Royal Society who won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1996, said, “This news is really quite shocking. (t is)bad for science in general, bad for the Royal Society, bad for the UK – basically secular country – and very bad for Martin (Lord Rees).”

He said that Lord Rees should donate the £1 million award to the British Humanist Association.

Professor Richard Dawkins, the Oxford evolutionary biologist and atheist, said, “This will look great on Templeton’s CV. Not so good on Martin’s.”

… [Source]

So a foundation with a religious grounding gives a prize to a scientist and it is bad for science, Royal Society, the U.K., etc? I guess we don’t need the taint of religious belief in science. In fact we should wipe scientists such as Gregor Mendel, Copernicus, Pasteur, Volta, Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier, Pascal, Monsignor Georges Lemaître, and countless Jesuits with major contributions to mathematics, astronomy, seismotology, etc. They should be wiped from science history for having beliefs “bad for science.”

The Templeton Prize each year honors a living person who has made an exceptional contribution to affirming life’s spiritual dimension, whether through insight, discovery, or practical works.

I am not sure how Lord Rees meet this criteria specifically, but he can certainly be lauded for not being a jerk as an atheist and of course for his scientific contributions.

Pastoral Care of Couples Who are Cohabitating

by Jeffrey Miller April 6, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

Most Rev. Michael J. Sheehan Archbishop of Santa Fe has issued a pastorally letter on cohabitation and I say bravo. This is a subject rarely brought up and this is rather odd considering how rampant this is. The good bishop takes an excellent pastoral approach and contrary to what some think pastoral does not mean not calling a sin a sin. Besides condemning cohabitation he also talks about the remedies for the particular situations.

We have three groups of people who are living contrary to the Gospel teaching on marriage: those who cohabit; those who have a merely civil union with no previous marriage; and those who have a civil union who were married before. These people are objectively living in a state of mortal sin and may not receive Holy Communion. They are in great spiritual danger. At the best – and this is, sadly, often the case – they are ignorant of God’s plan for man and woman. At the worst, they are contemptuous of God’s commandments and His sacraments.

It is amazing how many terms we now use to describe cohabitation to make it sound better. Shacking up, living together, etc. I guess fornication and adultery don’t sound as nice. Many see this as a dress rehearsal for married life, when usually it is just an undressed rehearsal which if it actually leads to marriage most often leads to a failed marriage since they have a higher divorce rate than couples who don’t cohabit.

This might pick up some media attention and likely they will distort this. The part about “merely civil unions” applies only to Catholics which of course are the audience for this pastoral letter. Non-Catholics can be validly married in a civil ceremony, but Catholics much follow the form of Marriage as outlined by Canon law. At least this is how I think the bishop is using the term “civil union”.

Movies

written by Jeffrey Miller

Given that Blessed Miquel Pro is the Patron Saint of my Blog I am quite interested in this movie on the Christeros.

This history blog has an excellent post of the history of this period in Mexico.

I am really looking forward to seeing the Movie “Of Gods and Men” when it comes out on Blu-Ray eventually. I have read nothing but rave reviews from both Christian and secular reviewers and Steven Greydanus at DecentFilms.com gives it his highest rating.

In addition the people behind what I thought was the best movie on Fatima called “The 13th Day” have released a documentary on Fatima. Some were not fans of the “The 13th Day” since it didn’t perfectly follow the events of Fatima, well this documentary should make a find companion to it.

In the midst of this of course we also have Showtime’s 8-week series on one of the Popes. Since it is Showtime out of 265 popes you knew it would be about Rodrigo Borgia – Pope Alexander VI the most notorious pope in history. Not to mention the Borgia family – though the family later produced Saint Francis Borgia. I can’t fault Showtime for picking such an interesting piece of history, it would be nice for a little balance considering how many Popes were saints and martyrs and the equally rich history surrounding them.

A study in contrasts

by Jeffrey Miller April 5, 2011April 6, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

On April 2, 2011, hundreds of pro-life advocates and more than two dozen leaders from all over the country gathered in downtown Chicago for an “Evening of Tribute” to honor Pro-life Action League founder and president, Joseph Scheidler. (www.joescheidlertribute.com)

It was on this occasion, that “pro-choice” abortion supporters in Chicago, organized a protest against Scheidler, who they claim, “works actively to eliminate access to reproductive healthcare and promotes the harassment of patients who enter family planning clinics for a variety of services.”

After hearing about the planned protest against Mr. Scheidler, the young organizers of the famed “Chicago Pro-Life Flash Mob”, once again, took to the streets in what proved to be a poignant reunion for both sides of the issue.

Update: Part II has now been released.

Easter is coming up so we were due for a new find

by Jeffrey Miller April 3, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

One of my blog policies has been that whenever some item is found in Israel that is suppose to date from the time of Jesus, is to not post on it and wait a week.  That has held me in good stead since they always turn out to be fakes that oddly turn up only during Lent/Easter.  This time 70 thin lead books have shown up along with the hype about what it could mean concerning Jesus.  As of today I was able to still find plenty of stories about this find.  This is despite the fact the Bibliobloggers called them fakes on Friday.  Via Michael Barber:

While media reports have sensationalized the story, academic bloggers have been slowly picking this apart. Mark Goodacre has an excellent round up. See also James McGrath’s post.

How do we know the discovery is a fraud? Well, for one thing, as Peter Thonemann at Oxford has pointed out, the Greek text was written by someone who apparently doesn’t know the Greek alphabet! Most amusingly, the writing mixes up the Lambda (the Greek “L”) and the Alpha (the Greek “A”). Not a very promising sign of authenticity!

So. . . we can all move on now. Of course, don’t hold your breath for the retractions.

The media always hopes for that bit of evidence to prove Christianity false despite the fact that the Crucifixion and Resurrection were historical events that were documented to some extent outside of Christian sources.  Really I wish they would find some authentic document of that time period.  When it turned out to attest to the historicity of the times boy would they be bummed.  I can just see their sour faces.

More Prophetic Parody

by Jeffrey Miller March 31, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

Yes it is getting harder to do parody.  Here is another instance of Prophetic Parity.  First the real news story.

Terry Brown
From: Herald Sun

SINFUL drivers can repent on the run with the opening today of Australia’s first drive-through confessional.

The pray-as-you-go service is to become slicker, with a sin-selection board to be installed by Easter and a smartphone app on the way.

South Melbourne Catholic priest Fr Bob McGuire said yesterday that the move brought the church up to speed with modern life.

“Everybody drives past this place but no one comes in,” Fr McGuire said.

“Now they can stop at the window, open their window and confess their sins. Then I’ll reassure them that they’ll be right.”

Do you think the drive-through confessional is a good idea? Tell us below

The 60-second car wash for the soul includes a symbolically refreshing spray of rose water.

A flashing green light will signal when a driver’s sins have been forgiven. “When you’re driving out you’ll be clean as a whistle,” Fr McGuire said.

The seven cardinal sins – lust, gluttony, greed, laziness, wrath, envy and pride – will be numbered on a sign, Chinese menu-style.

Father Z has comments.

This is treating Confession like a joke.

This is Father McGuire – what the heck is he wearing?  Not exactly a purple stole.

A picture of Father McGuire in action with his sprayer.

On 7 September 2009 Maguire announced on his blog that he had been contacted by church authorities and asked to tender his resignation on his upcoming 75th birthday. He replied with a public announcement that he would leave the decision of whether he should stay or go to his congregation.

His bishop wrote a column on why McGuire must retire, yet ended up leaving him in the parish till 2012 with the resulting public outcry.  What he is doing now goes beyond embarrisment and must be stopped by Archbishop Hart.

Now for my previous parody:

The question though is what is the best method to get American to frequent the confessional? In this fast food culture maybe we could appeal to a fast food idea like drive thru confession. I propose a new company called Jiffy Shriven after the Old English term to go to confession.

Here would be my logo.

And a sample drive thru.

And to easily remind people when to return to confession, the following sticker could be placed on the driver side windshield.

While your there they could also check your holy water font or holy water bottle level to see if more fluids need to be added. Though you won’t have to worry about them trying to hawk other sacrament while there. You won’t hear “I noticed you are not looking so well. We can give you final unction as part of a package deal.”

Award winning

by Jeffrey Miller March 31, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

WASHINGTON (March 30, 2011)—The U.S. bishops’ Committee on Doctrine authorized a statement March 24, critiquing Quest for the Living God: Mapping Frontiers in the Theology of God, a book by a Fordham University Professor, Sister Elizabeth A. Johnson, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood, New York.

In the statement, the Committee asserts that the “basic problem with Quest for the Living God as a work of Catholic theology is that the book does not take the faith of the Church as its starting point. Instead, the author employs standards from outside the faith to criticize and to revise in a radical fashion the conception of God revealed in Scripture and taught by the Magisterium.”

The statement notes that Sister Johnson attempts to justify her revisions of traditional Catholic theology by arguing that this tradition has become contaminated by ideas from Enlightenment thinkers, who are responsible for the conception of God in what she calls “modern theism.”

USCCB Statement

The other day Jack from the Catholic Key blog tweeted: “When I saw Elizabeth Johnson’s book condemned by USCCB, I felt certain it must have won a Catholic Press Association award – Sure enough” and also “A friend of mine said of CPA book awards – “CPA in the Spring, CDF in the Fall” – works almost every time.”

Father Z posts her response to the USCCB which has the typical why was I not consulted. Well it seems she didn’t consult the Church since the book does not have a nihil obstat which would be required for a book of theology.

An unfortunate side effect is the book is now at the top of the bestsellers list for theology at Amazon.

An example to follow

by Jeffrey Miller March 30, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

Norma Jean Coon recently announced on her site.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has lifted any canonical sanctions that I incurred by attempting ordination as a deacon. A letter from Bishop Robert Brom states that I may now return to the full practice of our Catholic faith. I have been very touched at the remarkable support of my actions and the prayers offered in my behalf during this trying time. I wish to thank all those who have prayed for me and for my family. The prayers and masses have been deeply appreciated. May Lent and Easter hold many blessings for you and your family.

Sincerely in our Lord,
Norma Jean Coon
March 25, 2011

Maybe Norma Jean Coon could get in touch with Father Bourgeois.

The excommunicated founder and leader of annual protests against U.S. military training for Latin American soldiers—protests in which Jesuit and other Catholic universities have played a major role—has been ordered by his Maryknoll superior to recant his vocal support of women’s ordination.

In a letter dated March 18 but disclosed yesterday, Roy Bourgeois, who has been automatically excommunicated and then laicized following his participation in a 2008 ceremony to “ordain” a Catholic woman, was given 15 days to recant or he will be formally dismissed from the Maryknoll Fathers.

Via Campus Notes

Please pray for Father Bourgeois that he will repent.

How to get a book deal

by Jeffrey Miller March 28, 2011
written by Jeffrey Miller

So if you were accused of indecent exposure, assault and five counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and plead guilty on one count how do you get a book deal? Simple just be a priest who was laicized and excommunicated and has a bone to pick with his faithful bishop. Life Teen founder Dale Fushek has a book out.

Similarly Father Cutie who broke his promises as a priest and had a secret affair also got a book deal where he attacks his bishop.

Both men not only left the Church but started up again as Protestants and complain about how they were treated. Fushek started a Praise and Worship Center – you know one of those open and non-judmental churches where of course you wouldn’t want to make a judgment about Fushek “flicking” of a young man’s genitals.

These of course are the exceptions since there are plenty of books by priests faithful to the Church who have good things to say about their bishop who got book deals – oh wait.

I have also wondered why is it that usually when the founder of a movement goes so much awry that the movement they started is reevaluated or ended, yet Life Teen just goes on.

Though I am biased in this regard since I consider Life Teen masses totally wrongheaded. You don’t get teens to learn to love the Mass by presenting a different Mass with secular overtones. If they start going to Life Teen Masses because they like the music, will they keep going as adults? I am very curious if any study has been done showing if members of Life Teen keep going to Mass as adults?

My bias is based on the fact that as a teenager I went to Mass with my mother at a parish with rock music where popular songs were used and people held hands and swayed almost like a wave. I even sang in the small ensemble. They really reached out for youth and even as a young atheist I could put up with going to Mass because of the music. That the year I sang for that parish I got no doctrinal content is no surprise or that the two priest there later left the priesthood. I might not have been open to the truth of the Church at that time, it just would have been nice if they had made an effort towards actual catechesis instead of feel good worship that didn’t make an atheist uncomfortable.
