Worshipers filled St. Mary’s cathedral Sunday despite ongoing restoration. It’s all part of the restoration project at St. Mary’s, where Catholic worshipers have sought spiritual guidance since 1874.<\/p>\n
“We have many people who come to the cathedral to pray and seek solitude from the hustle and bustle of the city, and we want this to be a welcoming place where they can do so,” said Bud Rowland, cathedral director. <\/p>\n
Church officials say restoring the cathedral’s original 19th century look will make it more inviting. <\/p>\n
“We remember that the people who saved and sacrificed to build this cathedral lived right after the civil war, in a time and era in the south when there was not a lot of money, so they sacrificed to build this little church,” Rowland said.
