"During the interview process, I wanted them to know what was going on with me. I told them I was the director of a gay mens’ choir," said Nadeau. "I was greeted by a Catholic Church that I thought didn’t exist: very kind, very loving, very compassionate.<\/p>\n

I guess my definition of compassion doesn’t include encouraging or at least ignoring a fellow sinner committing objectively grave acts.<\/p>\n

Under his direction, the music program grew to include two children’s choirs, youth and contemporary ensembles, and a Spanish-language musical liturgy. But in 2003, a group of conservative parishioners started campaigning against Nadeau, who they saw as an emissary of a movement to "legitimize homosexuality at the parish level."<\/p>\n

Members collected signatures on petitions to the papal nuncio, while an anonymous group stapled pictures of Nadeau to ads of underwear-clad men and slipped them under churchgoers’ windshields, he said.<\/p>\n

Later that year, former Kansas City Archbishop James Keleher told Nadeau if he kept his two jobs separate, he did not see a problem with his other position.<\/p>\n

The leadership at the archdiocese changed last year. In January, Nadeau said Applegate informed him that his membership in a "gay-affirming" group kept him from living out church doctrine.<\/p>\n

Like priests, parish employees need to follow religious texts because "part of holding a church position is upholding the church’s teaching," said the Rev. Thomas Tifft, rector of Saint Mary Seminary and Graduate School of Theology in Wickliffe, Ohio.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately by the looks of it it is probably a correct description of the former archbishop’s view.<\/p>\n

LAS VEGAS — As a Bishop Gorman High School teacher for six years, Jeff Crouse relished imparting knowledge to young minds.<\/span><\/p>\n

With his doctorate in film and television studies from the University of Warwick in England, Crouse handpicked cream-of-the-crop seniors to take his college-level classes in philosophy and film studies.<\/p>\n

He was active outside the classroom, too challenging students through a Philosophy Society Club and heading the school’s chapter of Amnesty International.<\/p>\n

A former seminarian, Crouse, 45, said he appreciated the Catholic culture at Bishop Gorman because of the freedom it allowed him to develop his classes and to teach from a religious perspective.<\/p>\n

But he discovered Bishop Gorman’s absolute intolerance on some matters when he promoted himself on the popular Web site MySpace.com, where he detailed his taste in music, movies and men.<\/p>\n

It somehow came to the attention of school administrators. Within a week, he was fired.<\/p>\n

Crouse said he was called into the principal’s office May 12 and told he was being terminated, per his contract, for "maintaining, by word or action, a position contrary to the ordinary teaching of the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n
