{"id":3918,"date":"2007-04-21T20:24:41","date_gmt":"2007-04-22T01:24:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/2007\/04\/21\/not-exactly-a-surprise\/"},"modified":"2007-04-21T20:24:41","modified_gmt":"2007-04-22T01:24:41","slug":"not-exactly-a-surprise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.splendoroftruth.com\/curtjester\/2007\/04\/not-exactly-a-surprise\/","title":{"rendered":"Not exactly a surprise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"blog\">A reader sent me a link to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/stltoday\/news\/stories.nsf\/religion\/story\/ED15AF96B1220FA5862572C4002085E9?OpenDocument\">the following story<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"bi\">St. Louis University, a Jesuit school proud of its Catholic heritage, celebrated a legal victory last week that affirmed it is not controlled by the Catholic church or by its Catholic beliefs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bi\">The Missouri Supreme Court agreed with the school in handing down a decision that the city of St. Louis did not violate state and federal constitutions by granting the university $8 million in tax increment financing for its new arena.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bi\">Opponents of the $80 million arena sued the school in 2004, halting construction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bi\">The Missouri Constitution prohibits public funding to support any &quot;&#8230; college, university, or other institution of learning controlled by any religious creed, church or sectarian denomination whatever.&quot;<\/p>\n<p class=\"bi\">\nThe debate came down to two words: &quot;control&quot; and &quot;creed.&quot; Does the guiding mission of a Catholic university align with the specific system of religious faith espoused by the Catholic church?
