Articles are marking the rounds from
\nvarious news sources about Bishop Gianfranco Girotti, head of the
\nApostolic Penitentiary, week-long Lenten seminar for priests that
\nincluded talks on confession and mortal sins. The news
\nagencies are casting this as a new list of the seven deadly sins even
\nthough it is no such thing.<\/p>\n
Different news agencies choose their
\nemphasis such as the Telegraph choose to headline that not recycling is
\na mortal sin and the Times says new deadly sins include “Sins Including
\nAbortion, Contraception and Drug-Dealing.” This is of course quite
\nsilly and religion reporting is notoriously bad and British religious
\nreporting even worse. “Ruining the environment” is not the
\nsame thing as not recycling and of course abortion, contraception, etc
\nare not new sins <\/p>\n

\nthe same distinction between mortal and venial sins as the Western or
\nLatin Church does, nor do they believe that those people who die in a
\nstate of sin are condemned to automatic damnation.<\/p>\n
\nEastern Catholics churches and
\nOrthodox Churches don’t use those words to make distinctions in sins,
\nbut the last line about ‘automatic damnation” seems to be quite off to
\nme in relation to Easter Catholic churches since obviously the same
\nCatechism applies to the whole Church and it is Canon Law and some
\ndifferences in emphasis in regard to theology that mark this.
\n Now the Wikipedia article on this makes the same claim so I
\nwould bet that this is where the article picked it up and in fact it
\nlooks to me that much of the article was lifted from Wikipedia.
\n So if
\nany of my readers could clear this up I would be interested in how
\naccurate this is.<\/p>\n
