A reader sent me
\nan interesting story bout St. Vincent College<\/a> using Internet
\nfilters to block porn and gambling sites on campus.<\/p>\n

“I realize that we are in the
\nminority of Catholic colleges and universities, but I like where we
\nare,” he said. “I think our Catholic identity and mission compel us to
\ngive this witness to our students that our community is not going to be
\ncomplicit in this spreading of pornography.”<\/p>\n

  Academic freedom has
\nbeen used to justify a lot of
\nthings on Catholic campuses and I will think that you will not be
\nsurprised that an argument of academic freedom is used here in
\nopposition of the filtering along with other arguments such as made by
\nGeorge Leiner, chair and associate professor of philosophy:<\/p>\n

“I do think it has a chilling effect on
\nthe exploration young adults
\nneed to make as they are determining what positions to take on
\nimportant matters in culture, whether they are academic, political,
\nmoral,” he said.<\/p>\n

Yes, access to porn sites is needed to
\nlearn what “positions” to take.  It is pornography that has a
\nchilling effect in its moral destruction.<\/p>\n

The president of the college applied to
\nthis line of reasoning saying.<\/p>\n

“I
\nthink academic freedom is an extremely important issue, but it’s not an
\nabsolute,” he said. “When you come to a Catholic college … you have
\nto look at the moral content of the education.”<\/p>\n

The
\narticle mentions that Franciscan University of Steubenville also uses
\nfilters in some of their systems, but that University of Notre Dame and Boston College don’t.<\/p>\n
