{"id":13543,"date":"2012-12-19T17:50:34","date_gmt":"2012-12-19T22:50:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.splendoroftruth.com\/curtjester\/?p=13543"},"modified":"2012-12-19T17:50:34","modified_gmt":"2012-12-19T22:50:34","slug":"when-conversions-are-a-threat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.splendoroftruth.com\/curtjester\/2012\/12\/when-conversions-are-a-threat\/","title":{"rendered":"When conversions are a threat"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>BEIJING \u2014 Chinese leaders issued an order last year quietly directing universities to root out foreigners suspected of plotting against the Communist Party by converting students to Christianity.<\/p>\n<p>The 16-page notice \u2014 obtained this month by a U.S.-based Christian group \u2014 uses language from the cold war era to depict a conspiracy by \u201coverseas hostile forces\u201d to infiltrate Chinese campuses under the guise of academic exchanges while their real intent is to use religion in \u201cwesternizing and dividing China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The document suggests that despite small signs of religious tolerance in recent decades, China\u2019s ruling officials retain strong suspicion of religion as a tool of the West and a threat to the party\u2019s authoritarian rule. And with the country\u2019s top leadership in transition and looking to consolidate power, Chinese religious leaders worry that the stance is unlikely to change in the near future.
