{"id":11906,"date":"2011-12-09T12:45:34","date_gmt":"2011-12-09T17:45:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.splendoroftruth.com\/curtjester\/?p=11906"},"modified":"2011-12-09T12:45:34","modified_gmt":"2011-12-09T17:45:34","slug":"im-going-to-be-a-dental-floss-tycoon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.splendoroftruth.com\/curtjester\/2011\/12\/im-going-to-be-a-dental-floss-tycoon\/","title":{"rendered":"I&#8217;m going to be a dental floss tycoon"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>They call themselves the Boston College Students for Dental Health (BCSDH), according to BC\u2019s student newspaper The Heights,but openly admit they don\u2019t care all that much about dental health.<\/p>\n<p>You see, the BCSDH is made up primarily of members of other groups such as The Sons of St. Patrick, the St. Thomas More Society, and the Pro-Life club. Their group is a parody of Boston College Students for Sexual Health (BCSSH), which caused a lot of trouble last academic year (see here and here) and apparently has not quit.<\/p>\n<p>According to The Heights, Michael Villafranca, founder of BCSDH and A&amp;S \u201914, said that he and other members of BCSDH were \u201cencouraging students to throw away the condoms and take floss instead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, the group of students distributing condoms was unamused.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">During the distribution, Marion Halftermeyer, a member of BCSSH and A&amp;S \u201913, approached Villafranca. At that time, Halftermeyer introduced herself and asked who Villafranca was and what he and the BCSDH were doing.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The message of BCSDH, according to Villafranca, was to tell students, \u201cMake a better decision this weekend, take some floss instead and skip the condoms.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">According to Jessika Parry, president of BCSSH and A&amp;S \u201914, the members of BCSDH were \u201cscreaming very inappropriate and disrespectful things\u201d during their floss distribution.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cWe had just gone over to introduce ourselves and to say that we felt that the way they were expressing their point of view was inappropriate and they weren\u2019t being very respectful to us,\u201d Parry said.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">On his response to Halftermeyer, Villafranca said, \u201cI basically told her I didn\u2019t have time for a conversation right then because I was handing out floss, but I\u2019d like to have the conversation at a different time.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">After the brief discussion, both groups continued to distribute their respective items.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The report said some students actually traded in their condoms for floss. Villafranca told also commented on his organization\u2019s goals.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>\u201cThe reality of BCSDH is that it\u2019s not a group of kids that are pro-dental health. We are just honest and dedicated Catholic kids trying to live the right way and trying to encourage other kids to live that way,\u201d Villafranca said. \u201cWe\u2019re not teens, we\u2019re not children anymore, we\u2019re grown men and women, and, at a certain point, we need to make decisions about what\u2019s right and what\u2019s wrong.\u201d Villafranca also explained the origins of BCSDH, saying the organization originated in September when he and his fellow members were upset that BCSSH had distributed condoms on Parent\u2019s Weekend.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">He said that he hoped distributing floss would be a funny and ironic way of beginning conversations \u201cnot just between [BCSDH] and BCSSH, but between students who walk through both groups.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>[<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.cardinalnewmansociety.org\/2011\/12\/09\/this-is-seriously-funny\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cardinal Newman Society<\/a>]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>They call themselves the Boston College Students for Dental Health (BCSDH), according to BC\u2019s student newspaper The Heights,but openly admit they don\u2019t care all that much about dental health.
