Let\u2019s \u201clighten-up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What happened?  I\u2019ll be darned, at all four occasions, all the hundreds, thousands of youth still knelt! They wanted to kneel in adoration!  They didn\u2019t want it simple or practical!  They didn\u2019t mind the challenge!  They wanted it!<\/p>\n<p>I realize it\u2019s a trivial example, a little thing.  Maybe I read too much into it.  But I wonder as well if once again our people \u2014 our young people \u2014 are telling us something:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t like \u2018Catholic-lite.\u2019  Don\u2019t pander to us!  Call us to greatness!  Call us to heroic virtue!  Remind us that following Jesus calls for sacrifice, and that we long for ways to let ourselves, and the world, know that we are different.  Don\u2019t make things simple!  Don\u2019t cater to convenience!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jesus summoned us to be a \u201clight to the world.\u201d  Nothing \u201clite\u201d about that.<\/p>\n<p>Have we put this lantern under a basket?  Have we turned light into lite?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I would say the answer is yes.
