In the homily our priest gave today on the traditional understanding of the
\nActive Martha and the Contemplative Mary from Luke 10:38-42 he added what I
\nthought was an interesting insight. He said that after Vatican II people
\nresponded by ditching the faith in favor of social action and government type
\nprograms (he said it a lot more eloquently than I have recorded) and that we
\nmainly concentrated on the active Martha side. There seems to be an age old
\nfalse dichotomy between comtemplate and active life, faith and works. I know I
\nam probably preaching to the choir when I talk about how much of the Catholic
\nFaith is both\/and and not either\/or. After Vatican II it does seem that the
\ndevotions and personal prayer were de-emphasized or totally ignored and that
\neverything came down to some kind of social\/political action. This was a rather
\nstrange reaction to Vatican II, where the personal call to holiness was stressed
\nand that everyone (not just priests and religious) were called to this life.
\nToday in our society every job seems to be for a specialist, the renaissance man
\nhas been replaced by a very narrowly focused specialized man. When I was in the
\nfirst throws of conversion I thought it unfair that since I was married I
\ncouldn’t become a priest. I fell into the trap of thinking that to be religious
\nthat you had to be the religious specialist of a priest\/minister. I have
\nwondered if this specialist mindset may also contribute to the demands by some
\nwomen to become priests. St. Paul must have run into some of this for him to
\nhave to explain the different roles that make up the Mystical Body of the Church
\nin 1 Corr 12. We must have a tendency to focus on only one aspect of something,
\nwhich has lead to probably every heresy. Every time Jesus had a special action
\nto perform it was always preceded by personal prayer. So I think to be both
\nMartha and Mary is not to be schizophrenic but to be fully complete.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
