Check out the “Divine Rhythm Society” (DRS) of San
\nFrancisco’s Episcopal Church of St. John the Evangelist, which holds “All Night
\nDance Celebrations” (ANDCs) in the church proper, at which some are reported to
\nuse “entheogens” (drugs used to enhance religious experience).<\/font><\/p>\n

And if that’s hard to believe, documents obtained by The
\nChristian Challenge also suggest that the use of entheogens has been backed by
\nboth St. John’s gay rector, Kevin Pearson, and gay retired Episcopal “bishop in
\nresidence,” Otis Charles–who is said to have admitted trying entheogens
\nhimself.<\/font><\/p>\n

The religious raves may be on limited-time offer,
\nhowever. Conflict over the DRS*, which has been part of St. John’s* since 1996,
\nfinally broke out in the liberal parish last year–after one reveler suffered
\n(but fortunately survived) an overdose of the illegal “date rape” drug (GHB)

“Divine Rhythm Society” (DRS). The DRS says that it has
\ntwo purposes: “First, we create space for direct, experiential forms of
\nspiritual practice. Recognizing that divine rhythm is everywhere, the Rhythm
\nSociety celebrates spirit through music, dance, meditation, and
\nplay.

Second, we cultivate community in which we can play out
\nthe daily life implications of insights gained from primary religious
\nexperience. <\/p>\n
