He<br \/>\nentered the Carmelites and with the permission of his superiors began to live a<br \/>\nstricter life. Afterwards he was persuaded by St. Teresa to begin, together with<br \/>\nsome others, the Discalced reform within the Order; this cost him much hard work<br \/>\nand many trials. He died in Ubeda in 1591, outstanding in holiness and wisdom,<br \/>\nto which his many spiritual writings give eloquent witness.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=#3333ff><i>Entrance Antiphon<\/i><br \/>I should boast of nothing but<br \/>\nthe cross of our Lord Jesus Christ; through Him the world is crucified to me,<br \/>\nand I to the world.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=#3333ff><i>Prayer<\/i><br \/>Lord, You endowed our Father St. John of<br \/>\nthe Cross with a spirit of self-denial and a love of the cross. By following his<br \/>\nexample may we come to the eternal vision of Your glory. We ask this through our<br \/>\nLord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,<br \/>\none God, for ever and ever.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=#3333ff><i>Prayer over the Gifts<br \/><\/i>Almighty Lord, look upon<br \/>\nthe gifts we offer in memory of our Father St. John of the Cross. May we imitate<br \/>\nthe love we proclaim as we celebrate the mystery of the suffering and death of<br \/>\nChrist, Who is Lord for ever and ever.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=#3333ff><i>Communion Antiphon<br \/><\/i>If anyone wishes to come<br \/>\nafter me, he must renounce himself, take up his <br \/>cross, and follow me, says<br \/>\nthe Lord.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=#3333ff><i>Prayer after Communion<br \/><\/i>Lord God, You have shown<br \/>\nus the mystery of the cross in the life of our Father St. John of the Cross. May<br \/>\nthis sacrifice make us strong, keep us faithful to Christ, and help us to work<br \/>\nin the Church for the salvation of all mankind.
