ohn was born at Fontiveros in Spain about 1542. He
\nentered the Carmelites and with the permission of his superiors began to live a
\nstricter life. Afterwards he was persuaded by St. Teresa to begin, together with
\nsome others, the Discalced reform within the Order; this cost him much hard work
\nand many trials. He died in Ubeda in 1591, outstanding in holiness and wisdom,
\nto which his many spiritual writings give eloquent witness.<\/font><\/p>\n

Entrance Antiphon<\/i>
I should boast of nothing but
\nthe cross of our Lord Jesus Christ; through Him the world is crucified to me,
\nand I to the world.<\/font><\/p>\n

Prayer<\/i>
Lord, You endowed our Father St. John of
\nthe Cross with a spirit of self-denial and a love of the cross. By following his
\nexample may we come to the eternal vision of Your glory. We ask this through our
\nLord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,
\none God, for ever and ever.<\/font><\/p>\n

Prayer over the Gifts
<\/i>Almighty Lord, look upon
\nthe gifts we offer in memory of our Father St. John of the Cross. May we imitate
\nthe love we proclaim as we celebrate the mystery of the suffering and death of
\nChrist, Who is Lord for ever and ever.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/i>If anyone wishes to come
\nafter me, he must renounce himself, take up his
cross, and follow me, says
\nthe Lord.<\/font><\/p>\n

Prayer after Communion
<\/i>Lord God, You have shown
\nus the mystery of the cross in the life of our Father St. John of the Cross. May
\nthis sacrifice make us strong, keep us faithful to Christ, and help us to work
\nin the Church for the salvation of all mankind. We ask this through Christ our
\nLord.<\/font><\/p>\n

First Reading

\nredeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the

Second Reading<\/i>
We know that the law is
\nspiritual; but I am carnal, sold under sin. I do not understand my own actions.
\nFor I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I
\ndo not want, I agree that the law is good. So then it is no longer I that do it,
\nbut sin which dwells within me. …Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness;
\nfor we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes
\nfor us with sighs too deep for words. And he who searches the hearts of men
\nknows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the
