“Tom Monaghan is someone who has made a lot of mistakes,” Healy said. “But he learns from his mistakes. And he’s not afraid to make mistakes.” <\/p>\n

Monaghan didn’t argue, saying another word that might be used to describe him is stupidity. <\/p>\n

“I seem to do many stupid things,” he said. “But with the grace of God I seem to come out of it.” <\/p>\n

He said his “treasury of mistakes” will help him more with the development of Ave Maria University than the money he has to invest. <\/p>\n

Monaghan, a resident of Ann Arbor, Mich., said he’s already given up personal belongings, such as yachts, a vacation home, antiques and other collectibles, to pay for his effort to “help more people get to heaven.” <\/p>\n

“When I gave up that stuff, it was a great relief,” he said. “What I’m doing now is much more rewarding to me.”
