A California priest threatens to
\nhold back a treat unless his
\ncongregation agrees to play ball:<\/span>

Troubles
\nat St. Anne Catholic School in Santa Monica were so dire at
\none point that Father Michael D. Gutierrez turned to his congregation
\nfor help. He refused to give his sermon until at least 10 families
\nstepped forward to consider enrolling their children in the financially
\nstrapped parish school.\n<\/div>\n



\nA risky proposition, methinks.
\nGranted that a parish school is a good cause, how many preachers would
\ngive the faithful the option — even at no cost — of going home
\nhomilyless?<\/span>

\n

\nI hope Father Michael’s gambit
\ncatches on. Think of the happy possibilities … “Unless I see a double
\nsawbuck in the collection basket every week from every family, you’ll
\nnever hear On Eagles Wings in this church aga<\/span>in!”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Now that would be a great fundraiser tool.
\n Contribute money or we will use Here I am Lord<\/span> or
\nother such song for all four hymns of the standard hymn sandwich.
\n How about selling tickets to a Gather Hymnal bonfire?
\n Surely you would raise enough to fund the Adoramus or other
\nappropriate hymnal.  Cough up money or a drum kit will be
\ngiven to the choir!<\/p>\n

Now in reality the idea of withholding a
\nhomily is really a bad idea and the first instance of sermon extortion
\nI have ever heard of. You have to be a pretty confident preacher in the
\nfirst place to use this one, though of course under Canon law
\nthere is no way you could licitly do this for a Sunday or other Holy
\nDay of Obligation Mass.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
