There has been a lot of buzz in St.
\nBlogs over the Pope celebrating
\nthe Solemnity of the Baptism of our Lord using the Sistine Chapel’s
\noriginal altar and praying the Mass Ad Orientum.  In previous
\nyears a wooden platform was built over the original altar with a
\nsmaller altar placed on it.<\/p>\n

\nhighly ironic reporting on this.<\/p>\n

In a departure from tradition,
\nBenedict did not celebrate the Mass at a small altar set up to face the
\ncongregation. <\/p>\n

No doubt we are in for a rash of
\nstories of the Pope turning his back on the people as we got as
\njournalistic boilerplate in coverage of the Motu Proprio.  
\nAnybody who has read then-Cardinal Ratzinger’s book Spirit of the
\nLiturgy know precisely the Pope’s view of celebrating Mass Ad Orientum.
\n Fr. Z. says “I contend that more damage was done by
\nturning around the orientation of Mass than perhaps any single other
\nchange.<\/a>” and I am inclined
\nto agree with him. Facing the people can too easily lead to “Ad
\nEntertainer.”<\/p>\n
