But ever since late August,\u00a0<em>Ecce Homo<\/em>\u00a0has become a tourist attraction, bringing scores of Internet jokers to the Santuario de Misericordia Church in Borja, Spain. These tourists are bringing all of their euros, and now Gim\u00e9nez, who earlier claimed she was having anxiety attacks from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-19349921\">all<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2012\/aug\/24\/spain-europe-news\">the<\/a>\u00a0press coverage, wants a cut.<\/p>\n<p>According to the northern Spain newspaper\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.elcorreo.com\/vizcaya\/v\/20120919\/cultura\/cecilia-exige-ahora-derechos-20120919.html\"><em>El Correo<\/em><\/a>\u00a0cited by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20120919\/10464820431\/old-lady-ruins-fresco-claims-copyright-demands-money.shtml\">TechDirt<\/a>(which was tipped off by Twitter user\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sinkdeep\/status\/248392890928226304\">@sinkdeep<\/a>), tourists started flocking to the church, but weren&#8217;t leaving any donations. So to prevent the disruptive hordes from overtaking the church, the Santi Spiritus Hospital Foundation, which owns the sanctuary, started charging a fee to visitors wanting to see\u00a0<em>Ecce Mono<\/em>, or\u00a0<em>Behold the Monkey<\/em>\u00a0as it&#8217;s now jokingly dubbed. In just 4 days, the Foundation made \u20ac2,000, (or about $2,600).<\/p>\n<p>El Correo says this has angered Gim\u00e9nez and her family, and they&#8217;ve sought lawyers to win royalties for her work, which epically ruined a prized fresco of Jesus Christ. It seems the Santuario de Misericordia Church intends to defend its earnings as well, and has retained lawyers.
