Fr. Luis Ladaria, S.J.

John Allen Jr. reports on the appointment of Jesuit Fr. Luis Ladaria, a Spaniard, as secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.  He uses the term he coined "affirmative orthodoxy" in regards to Ladaria.   Which he previously described as "I mean a tenacious defense of the core elements of classic Catholic doctrine, but presented in a relentlessly positive key. "

I found one of the nice little testimonials on Fr. Ladaria stick out.

"He is also very human. He laughs a lot, and is very gracious with the women who clean our offices etc."

And he smiles at children.  Though I am all for describing people working at the CDF in a human way instead of as breeds of dogs.

Appointing a Jesuit as Secretary of the CDF since many of the theologians investigated come from the same order.  OK gratuitous Jesuit swipe and Fr. Ladaria certainly looks like another very good appointment by the Pope.

After the Jesuits thumbed their nose at the Holy Father with their election of a syncretist to succeed St. Ignatius, here's a thumb in their eye.

"Fourth vow, ladies! Papal Ka-POW!"

Given that the press can't get the "formerly know as the Inquisition" out of their minds, coupled with his being a Spanish Jesuit...
Oh boy.

Oh boy.

Jeff, what does "gratuitous Jesuit swipe" mean? Gratuitous?

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition... ;)

Funny how no one sees this as a thumb in the eye of Jesuit haters...

;)

Anytime I see a dig like that coming out of anyone at NCR, I know we have a solid man.

The more solid the cleric, the more swipes and digs.

"affirmative orthodoxy"...I mean, he tells you that your thinking is corrupt but you like it...

(of course he coined it...all silly monikers start in the ego)

There are a lot of great Jesuits. I think that appointing one (assuming he is a great Jesuit), especially to this position, is a wonderful way for the pope to say it is not time to give up on the storied Jesuit order.

After all, look who we have as pope -- a German, who demonstrates that the Catholic church couldn't be killed by the Nazis or by European secularism. Just as the last pope showed the Catholic church couldn't be killed by the Communists. It WOULD be a gratuitous shot at the Jesuits to say that this proves that the Catholic church can't be killed by the Jesuits... but one good Jesuit I know says that a proof that Christ really leads the church is that it has been run by Italians for 2000 years and it's still around, so maybe it's not TOO nasty to say.

"There are a lot of great Jesuits." If you mean by "great", "orthodox", you are right. Unfortunately most of them are dead or have been banished from teaching positions and other postitions where they can faithfully proclaim Catholic teachings. The thought that this is a "thumb in the eye of jesuit haters" is ludicrous. Only one who has succumb to the all famous jesuit pride could think so. This nothing more than a bright beacon of light to all those fallen away jesuits who now make up the society of judas, that they have lost thier way. It also highlights the grave mistake we parents made in thinking we were sendiong our sons to a Catholic High School.

Kim Poletto,

The " ;) " at the end means it's a joke. Get it?

Jesuit John:

I beleive it is ":)" not ";)". Must be that jesuit education. Get it?

I wonder if this is what is meant by "instruct the unlettered" ;)

Known as "God's Jester" was a martyr for the faith and a man of wisdom, fun, tricks, poetry, song, and dance. Thus seemed an appropriate Patron Saint of this blog.
