Angels and Demons

Actor Tom Hanks is in Rome for the filming of Angels and Demons, a film adaptation of the book by Dan Brown.

Director Ron Howard is working on the film version of Brown's novel, following up on his previous cinematic rendition of another novel by the same author, The Da Vinci Code. Scenes are already being staged around the Pantheon in Rome.

The production of Angels and Demons will cost more than $100 million. The film is due to make its appearance in theaters next summer.

Well, if this movie was going to be made anyway I don't think that this is necessarily bad news. The Da Vinci Code was pretty much a flop in the United State and got only a 25% rating from Rotten Tomatoes. Even fans of the book found the movie boring. Ron Howard also directed How the Grinch Stole Christmas which was a terrible piece of film making. Ron Howard certainly seems to fail at adaptations, though his films with Russell Crowe are quite good along with his comedies.

So maybe we can pray that he will be just as good of director as he was for the previous Dan Brown movie and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, though I guess that would be a pretty mean prayer. Then again the plot for Angels and Demons is not as bad towards the Church as The Da Vinci Code anyway. It is rather silly taking place in Vatican City with illuminati, antimatter, a Pope with a son from artificial insemination, and a murderous Camerlengo, and theological nonsense about being able to force a link between God and Man via science.

I am still convinced as I wrote before that Ron Howard's animus towards the Church is that he mistakenly thinks that Opus Dei is Latin for Opie Die.

Very funny! :-)

Good one Jeff! (The kids had to run over to see what the guffah was about!)

"I am still convinced as I wrote before that Ron Howard's animus towards the Church is that he mistakenly thinks that Opus Dei is Latin for Opie Die."
Guffaw inducing timing as well as content on that one. It was a completely unexpected conclusion. :)

A rare blog-induced audible laugh.

It caught me so off guard I couldn't help it.

Hey, you just spoiled one of the plots of As&Ds! Of course, if that was your intention, I won't argue. Here's another spoiler for what's one crazy book, one train wreck of a tale, everyone who's reviewed it hates the ending, where Prof. Langdon survives a two-mile fall from a helicopter by landing in the Tiber. I suppose St. Jude intervened, for the sake of a truly hopeless cause?
I will confess to buying the soundtrack of da Vinci Code, a very haunting score and the best part of the whole film.

It is amazing how quickly the DaVinci Code craze faded... thankfully! The whole story was such a mess and I hear the movie was even worse than the book. Too bad good old opie is involved in this junk. I have enjoyed many of his films. I could say the same thing for Tom Hanks. We need to pray these guys find some real faith in their lives!

However the movie does, it will still sell the book.

Well, it's about time Hollywood laid off Methodists and went after Catholics.

I am a great fan of Tom Hanks, and I am sure he is more discerning of the script this time. This one got to be better than the 25% rating of DaVinci Code by Rotten Tomatoes last time around. Should improve to 26% this time you bet.

I hope Clint Howard is in the movie...

Playing "Where will Clint show up?" may be the only entertainment in the whole thing.

What is Opie Die?

"Angels and Demons" is a rotten book, and in one way even worse that TDC -- it's not funny. (I thought TDC was hilarious.) It's about the supposed war between science and religion and both come off very badly. There's a bomb in it powerful enough to destroy the entire planet! Because why not make enough for that! There's a really, really bad misunderstanding of Catholic theology that is a major plot point! And just to keep things equal opportunity offensive, there's a Muslim assassin who kills people and then gets to have sex with prostitutes as his reward!

Did I mention it's a rotten book? How this man ever got any readers is beyond me.
