Help Wanted

In a sign of the intensifying battle for Catholic voters between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, particularly ahead of next month’s Pennsylvania primary, both candidates have brought Catholic outreach coordinators aboard their campaigns, God-o-Meter has learned.

Just last week, Obama’s campaign hired Mark Linton, a legislative aide working on poverty and other social policy issues in Obama’s Senate office, as its National Catholic Outreach Coordinator. Linton, who had previously worked for Catholic Relief Services, is currently focused almost exclusively on Pennsylvania, where roughly one in three Democratic voters are expected to be Catholic.

“Mark’s job is to help get Senator Obama’s message on health care, the war, and helping American families out to the Catholic grassroots,” said Joshua DuBois, Obama’s National Director of Religious Affairs, in an interview Monday, describing Linton’s role. “Obama is just beginning to introduce himself to Catholics around the country.”

The Obama campaign would not grant a request to interview Linton, saying he’s not an official spokesperson.

The Clinton camp, meanwhile, has brought aboard Eric McFadden, the former field director for Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, a progressive Washington-based Catholic group founded after the 2004 election to combat conservative Catholic advocacy organizations.

More over at beliefnet's God-o-Meter.

This does make me wonder how a campaign advertises for a Catholic outreach coordinator?

Help wanted a Catholic outreach coordinator to help campaign for a candidate that supports the murder of innocents in the womb, supports experimenting on human embryos and killing them afterwards, supports cloning of humans for research and killing them afterwards, supports killing the sick and the elderly if they want to die or just have an evil family member representing them, plus support other Catholic values like homosexual marriage.  Must be able to inform fellow Catholics that voting for a candidate totally in favor of intrinsic evils is acceptable.  That somehow supporting so many moral evils has no bearing on their on their character and their decisions.  After all a candidate that supports sucking the brains out of children as they are being born obviously is going to make ethical decisions in their presidency.

Must be able to hold the tension of working for a campaign that will attack the other Democratic candidate as not being pro-choice enough while at the same time reaching out to Catholics telling them it doesn't matter if their pro-choice in the first place since political decision will not bring a culture of life an any way whatsoever.

Communication skills are a must in explaining why the candidates frequent and fervent support of abortion actually means that they are working on reducing the same.

An advance degree in moral relativism is required along with good memory skills for repeating phrases such as "pro-choice is not pro-abortion" and other gems.

Moral schizophrenia while not required is a bonus.

We've been discussing the Clinton/Obama idea for a few days. Question is, does the sama analysis apply when one candidate is ostensibly pro-life and the other is not.

Below is a copy of the e-mail I just sent to these folks:

"I am a Pennsylvanian Catholic and reviewed the Catholics for Obama website carefully.

Perhaps I missed it, but I don't see any attribution for the ownership or administration of the website.

The website says that it is not affiliated with Obama or the Church, but it does not say who produced the site, maintains it, or pays for it.

This matters because many Pennsylvania Catholics are skeptical of the attention we are receiving. Having been locked out of a meaningful Primary for so many years, we are disinclined to take such overtures at face-value.

Best to just ask outright... Who is paying for this? Is this a PAC? If so, what is the PAC address and registration information? If not, who paid for the slick format?

Forgive me for putting it this way, but if you don't answer, my concerns will be validated and I will get the word out."

I will post the reply if one is received.

(It really is a slick site. Far better than most community-run products. Makes me skeptical.)

Isn't it ironic? So when the pope comes to the USA, the media (and the progressive liberals) will make sure to blast him for the Church's stand on morals, etc. It's acceptable to twist and distort portrayals of Catohlics (lay & clergy) on TV & the movies. The Church is under the "last acceptable prejudice" (to borrow from the title of a recent book).

Oh, but now they want our votes so I guess Catholics are OK now. The fact that both sides have hired a "Catholic Outreach Coordinator" seems really strange and scary. I would imagine that working for either camp would require massive amounts of Holy Water to keep the evil away. :)

Hi Jeff, you've been tagged...

;-)

I don't know who "Roman Catholics for Obama" are or who is funding them, but I know they are intentionally attempting to deceive. Just look at their excerpt from Archbishop Chaput's letter! They snip it leaving the impression that it's okay to vote for a pro-abortion candidate if you vote for the candidate "despite" their pro-abortion stance. Huh? This is purposely taken out of context to DECEIVE. This is what follows that line:

"But they also need a compelling proportionate reason to justify it.

9. What is a “proportionate” reason when it comes to the abortion issue? It’s the kind of reason we will be able to explain, with a clean heart, to the victims of abortion when we meet them face to face in the next life — which we most certainly will. If we’re confident that these victims will accept our motives as something more than an alibi, then we can proceed. "

Sorry, but saying you were worried about universal health care more than the deaths of over 1 million innocent victims EACH YEAR just is NOT a proportionate reason.

Judith,

Thank you for finding the rest of the line.

Did you send it to them in a comment on their site?

You did the work, now call em on it!

I looked for a response from the Church and found nothing. I guess I was hoping for a review and critique- perhaps a challenge to the practices cited by Judith.

Thank You !!!!

I think you summed it up perfectly...and so did Cardinal Sean O'Malley of Boston:

http://www.catholic.org/national/national_story.php?id=25922

What really sickens me is the number of Roman Catholic Clergy and Religious who swoon, shudder and salivate at the very mention of the Democratic Party - the party of "Baby Killers!"

"Moral schizophrenia while not required is a bonus."
Oh, I dunno, Jeff. I think it would have to be a requirement.

Well... No response from Roman Catholics for Obama. I think we can safely say that there will be none.

The site links directly to and through Obama's official site. It claims to have no affiliation to either Obama's campaign or the Church.

There is something unseemly about "targeting" particular groups for elections. More importantly, the arguments contained therein are cheapened by the slickness of the message and its seemingly hidden source.

If the representations on the site were accurate, and Judith's post above suggests that they are not, the method of transmission diminishes the impact.

I am not surprised at the unwillingness to answer simple questions about the source of funding and information on Obama's site. I am disappointed that his staff are simply a bunch of hacks who see "transparency" as merely another buzz-word.

Follow up.

I received the following response from Roman Catholics for Obama. I removed the names and e-mail addresses from the text. It is otherwise intact.

The Curt Jester

A former atheist who after spending forty years in the wilderness finds himself with both astonishment and joy a member of the Catholic Church. This blog presents my hopefully humorous and sometimes serious take on things religious, political, and whatever else crosses my mind.

My conversion story

Email Me:

Blessed Miguel Pro, S.J.

Known as "God's Jester" was a martyr for the faith and a man of wisdom, fun, tricks, poetry, song, and dance. Thus seemed an appropriate Patron Saint of this blog.
