Liturgical practices
After coming across this at Dad29 who was quoting from a new blog called Fatherless Catholic I though it must be a parody. If what this blogger reports is accurate, then his pastors comments are quite stunning.
Discussions with our new “pastor” about the new liturgical practices that violate Redemptionis Sacramentum include such “pastoral” comments as:
“I will not celebrate the Liturgy in a way that makes ME uncomfortable.” (This is in reference to calling God “Father” and praying the Eucharistic Prayers as written.)
“Your previous Pastors (who celebrated the Mass according to the GIRM and Redemptionis Sacramentum) did the parish no favors and poorly formed the parish when it comes to Liturgical practice.”
“The Archbishop has not fully implemented the GIRM and Redemptionis Sacramentum in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.”
“I am not sticking my neck out here as there are parishes in other parts of the Archdiocese that celebrate the Mass in a more liberal way than I do and are not required to change.”
When telling “Father” that his actions are dividing the parish his comment is: “Maybe that needs to happen.” So much for being concerned about the church community.
And my person favorite: “If I have a choice between listening to you (Fatherless Catholic) and listening to Bishop Sklba, I will listen to Bishop Sklba.”
Hmmmmmm. I guess Archbishop Dolan does not matter in this.
I have seen more and more of the excuse that the bishop has not fully implemented GIRM and Redemptionis Sacramentum in a diocese. Maybe I am missing something in liturgical law, but I didn't realize that the Bishop had to hand-hold pastors in reading and them simply implementing Church documents. Most of what is mentioned in Redemptionis Sacramentum are proscriptions and are basically "stop doing these." The only implementation is to stop doing those abuses. What exactly needs to be implement about not consecrating the Precious Blood in the glass cruet and after consecration not pouring the Precious Blood into chalices? The bishop can not give a dispensation for this (despite what Cardinal Mahony says). The implementation excuse was also used when the dispensation for EMHC to purify the sacred vessels expired and the Pope formerly rescinded the previous dispensation for the United States.
Dad29 has some comments on this also and I agree with his diagnosis "He must have missed the last 20 years of "I Gotta Be MEEEEEE!!!"

'Twould seem to me that if half the parish left for a more liturgically correct pastor, and Father Improvisation's salary was at stake, maybe he might find time to study up on "Redemptionis Sacramentum."
I was fortunate to be a deacon-intern at a Newman Center where the priest-director was fairly orthodox if not always the most liturgically correct. He put me in charge of liturgy! When S.R. came out I was at Oxford U. and the English OP's immediately implemented the document. However, there wasn't much for them to change since they are pretty much by the book liturgically anyway. Anyway, at the Newman Center, there were a few grousings from the hippie set but for the most part we had a smooth change over. In this post, what Fr. Hollywood is worried about is coming off as traditionalist to his fellow Frs. Hollywood. He doesn't care what the parishioners or the bishops think. He's worried about his immediate colleagues. They are the ones who can kill his career plans in a heartbeat.

Unfortunately we are cursed by a few remaining Fr Hollywoods here too. One of them succeeded me at my former parish and managed to drive off some of the most active parishioners. He is now fortunately gone (unfortunate for the parish that has him now) and is replaced by a good solid orthodox priest.
Yes, my former pastor said to me, "The bishop chooses NOT to implement Sacramtum Redemptionis" and I (for some reason) was stunned. There was nothing to say in reply. Just recently I saw a new photo of the bishop with a glass container of wine on the altar as he celebrated Mass. But I should not be surprised, this diocese has not
been obedient in 40 years.
It IS all about us, isn't it? You know, as father told us, the gathering of the assembly to share a meal. Or I have a choice to go to the other parish in town to hear fr. hollywood with his karoake Mass and jokes and lets all go up and 'bless' him for it is all about him.
Those are my choices. And I long for a holy and properly offered Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. One priest in the diocese who was looking into the extraordinary form has been sent out of the diocese. Cannot have that pre-vatican two Latin stuff here...
The priest's reply is all-too-familiar. When I "inquired" about the SAME abuses, the liturgical director for my diocese gave me the SAME reply. She also told me it takes awhile for Mass directives to make their way to parish level. They have to go from the Pope, to the USCCB, to the individual bishops, and then to the parish priests. Huh?
How strange it is, if the Pope were to proclaim today the approval of women priests, you better believe we would have Masses celebrated by Mother so-in-so tonight.
I will continue to pray for my parish priest, as well as for the replacement of our bishop, who should be retiring in a few years.
I am learning patience and more prayer in my parish.
When are Priests and liturgists going to learn that the Liturgy is not a tool to push one's own personal political agenda? Following the book is a way to avoid political agendas. I really think Priests and Bishops need to go back and reread the Vatican II document once a year. Maybe if people stop talking of the immaterial spirit of the council and start reading the documents themselves, they might learn a thing or two. The documents might also shed some light on the commentary too.

If I were in that parish, I would send a letter to the Abp of Milwaukee, and then followup a few months later with the CDW if I weren't satisfied. Catholics have a right to abuse-free liturgies. Ignorance of Redemptionis Sacramentum is one thing. Knowledge of it and disobedience to it - hey, it's just one more "non-serviam".
