Catholic Blog Awards Nominations

Comments (10)

Nominations for the 2007 Catholic Blog Awards are now being accepted. This year the categories have been streamlined and categories such as most bizarre blog have been removed. Also there are no seperate men and women categories this time - which I can understand -though it really makes some categories even more difficult to choose from. Kathy Shaidle quipped last year when she was nominated for best women's blog "I'm up for Best Uterus again!"

1. Best Overall Catholic Blog
2. Best Designed Catholic Blog
3. Best Written Catholic Blog
4. Best New Catholic Blog
5. Best Individual Catholic Blog
6. Best Group Blog
7. Best Blog by Clergy/Religious/Seminarian
8. Funniest Catholic Blog
9. Smartest Catholic Blog
10. Most Informative & Insightful Catholic Blog
11. Best Apologetic Blog
12. Best Political/Social Commentary Catholic Blog
13. Best Insider News Catholic Blog
14. Most Spiritual Blog

This year some other good changes have been made. You have to register to make a nomination and there will only be one vote allowed for the period the voting is up and the daily results will not be displayed - just the final winners. It is sad to think about cheating in regards to St. Blogs, but it seems quite obvious this did occur in the past.

I have already made my nominations and it was extremely difficult to choose a number one for each category. I track around 300 Catholic blogs via my RSS Aggregator and choosing among those who I consider friends is extremely perplexing.

As for the humor category - there is much more competition this year.

Ironic Catholic Always make me laugh and I lover her good theological knowledge as developed in her humor.
Catholic Cartoon Blog Paul Nichol's cartoons are just flat out funny.
Catholic News.org Maureen Martin (pen name) hasn't posted in six months - but her parodies usually had me rolling. Even her tongue-in-cheek About me is hilarious. She also did some parodies in Crisis Magazine that also were great.
The Ox Files The Dumb Ox also hasn't posted in awhile - but his liturgical parodies were humorist perfections. He once wrote me with some parody suggestions I though so good that I told him he should start his own blog - which he did.
Alive and Young While Paul Cat doesn't direct the majority of his posts at parodies, he certainly has a humorist bent. Though being middle age myself his blog title makes me want to start a blog called Still Alive.
Ask Sister Mary Martha I have not decided whether this blog is written by an extremely funny nun or that it is is parody blog. Regardless this blog is just plain funny in relating the day to day life in a convent. If Erma Bombeck had been a cloistered nun then this would have been her blog.
Orthometer Fr. Erik Richtsteig writes and links to funny stuff and he also finds some pretty odd stuff. St. Blogs is certainly not short of good orthodox priests with a great sense of humor. Those that loved Fr. Sibley's blog will find a similar soul in Fr. Richtsteig.
Trousered Ape Bob the Ape doesn't post much, but when he does you can be sure it is funny and extremely odd. He recently posted HOW DO YOU SOLVE A PROBLEM LIKE GODZILLA, but his best post of the year was Godzilla The Musical which is hilarious.
American Papist A master at photo captions and the PPOTD! are always fun.

And of course I have to mention Julie at Happy Catholic who frequently posts jokes and besides any Terry Pratchett has to have a great sense of humor.

Now here are some other nominations for categories that don't exist.

Best Blog by someone never nominated. Eve Tushnet.

Best Headline Writer. This one is a tie between Kathy Shaidle and Dawn Eden.

Most Missed Blog De Civitate Dei

Geekiest Catholic blog - Another tie, this time Ecce Homo and Small but Disorganized. Though Dr. Thursday with his posts on the Rosary and DNA are right up there also.

Blog most likely to make me rethink something Mark Shea

Blog that takes the longest to load -My Domestic Church. Now I truly do love Elena's blog, but she has so many things in her sidebars that if you read the status bar it is like reading the checklist for a shuttle liftoff - which is probably less complicated.

So choose the best you can and nominate your favorite Catholic bloggers.

You are very kind to mention me ... and I agree about the difficulty of choosing the blogs to nominate. There are just too many good ones!

Thanks Jeff, that means a lot.

Jeff, thanks for the compliment--I appreciate hearing that the theology comes through (sometimes)!

There are a lot of funny folks out there, and good reading period.

The "if there were categories" are clever (and true as far as I can tell!).

How are the nominations made? Is this only open to bloggers, or can those of us with maybe too much time on our hands join in?

I'd nominate Crossed the Tiber for Most Spiritual Blog. Tiber Jumper's a great writer, is extremely level-headed, very spiritual, and I never grind my teeth while reading his blog.

Hey, Jeff! thanks for the runner-up "nomination"... But how geeky can you get when one of the titles of the Pope is "Supreme Pontiff" = "greatest bridge builder"... our own religion has an engineer as a leader. Hee hee. It's quite reassuring: gotta have both theory and practice.

Regarding my rosary/DNA posts: I was only trying to call attention to the Source underlying my own technical efforts - God the Master Designer:

"...His designs shall stand forever,
the plans of His heart for all generations..."

(I quote from memory; it is Psalm 33(32))

After all, it is literally true even in our own case that the 3-gig DNA "word" is made flesh.

LOL! I know. My bad.

I tend to collect things in real life also. I imagine that when I go to "load" my house up to move, that will take a long time too... which is probably why I'll just stay here until they remove my mummified corpse!

I do have a feedburner link though - it's superfast!

Oh, the best headline writer has to go to Mike Aquilina at http://www.fathersofthechurch.com/. He is hysterical. He's probably the Best New Blog too.

Thanks for the compliment Jeff! There's nothing better than being nominated as the geekiest of anything, even if it doesn't really exist.

Now the pressure's on... I have to try and post more often.

Pax et bonum!

Wee! I got a mention!

"Do one thing and do it well" is the motto of my humor attempts at AmP. Cheers!

The Curt Jester

A former atheist who after spending forty years in the wilderness finds himself with both astonishment and joy a member of the Catholic Church. This blog presents my hopefully humorous and sometimes serious take on things religious, political, and whatever else crosses my mind.

My conversion story

Email Me:

Blessed Miguel Pro, S.J.

Known as "God's Jester" was a martyr for the faith and a man of wisdom, fun, tricks, poetry, song, and dance. Thus seemed an appropriate Patron Saint of this blog.
