Diogenes has more on the history of the Archdiocese of L.A. Ministry with Lesbian and Gay Catholics,

You'll remember the Archdiocese's original animator of gay ministry was a Carmelite named Peter Liuzzi, who dismayed orthodox Angelenos with his counter-Catholic advocacy and who was constantly protected by Mahony's inner circle. That Liuzzi's abstract advocacy fronted for a personal lifestyle issue became obvious when fellow Carmelite Dominic Savino was found to have molested high school boys, and Mahony's right-hand man Msgr. Richard Loomis, in a hacked e-mail, urged his fellow apparatchiks to play down the Savino-Liuzzi connection (3/19/2002):

A complicating fact: I believe that Father Peter Liuzzi is being assigned to Crespi Carmelite HS as a faculty member. A representative of the "Lay Catholic Mission" has approached a Carmelite priest who occasionally helps here at Saint Charles to question "the wisdom of assigning Father Liuzzi to an all-boy school." On top of that, Father Liuzzi and Father Savino have lived in the same community house for as long as I have worked at the ACC -- not quite seven years. They are close friends. I am not sure how many people know these facts and I would not want to tip my hand. Everything in this "complicating fact" paragraph would be tracked right back to me. I would not want it made public if it can be avoided. But my thought is that one issue might ignite the other in the press, both secular and retro-Catholic.

Here's how the daisies were chained: Liuzzi was the Archdiocese's gay ministry guru. He left the job, and was teaching part time at a Carmelite high school, while sharing a bungalow with his boyfriend Savino, who'd molested boys at the same school. Loomis, the director of the Cardinal's secretariat for administrative services, ran interference for Liuzzi when the Savino story broke. But it doesn't end there. Loomis himself later left ministry after being accused of molesting two boys. ("Loomis. That case proves that our procedures are working," said Cardinal Mahony, when taxed by Jason Berry in 2005 with his adjutant's perfidy in the matter.)

The conflict of interest here speaks for itself. Yet the Archbishop, and the Archdiocese's Ministry with Lesbians and Gays, are still under full sail -- which indicates that the forces that share their sympathies have more clout than those that don't. Those of us Loomis calls retro-Catholics might object to the Gay Rainbow Jesus, but it's clear that most senior churchmen in the Archdiocese would be bewildered at the suggestion that there's anything objectionable about it. In heraldic terms, it's an eloquent emblem of Cardinal Mahony's tenure as bishop and, indeed, of what they understand as religion full stop.

Cardinal Mahony himself ordained an openly homosexual deacon and activist last year so you know the Archdiocese ministry is really just a subversion of the Church's teaching under the wraps of tolerance. They talk about being "consonant with Church teaching", but somehow never get around to what those teachings actually are as evidenced by their web page. No references to the Catechism or any authoritative Church documents on their ministry site. Now how could that happen? I guess it is just a coincidence that Deacon Eric Stoltz the openly homosexual activist who designed the ministries website and in fact the archdiocese website is involved.

i wonder if mahoney was one of the ones working to silence burke during the USCCB's debate on the latest instruction on the pastoral care of homosexuals? burke wanted *courage* prominently mentioned, but from what i hear, several bishops poo-pooed him. but burke fought on and *courage* is mentioned as a footnote. thank God (and burke) we got a toe hold on this debate.

Does anyone know if the Holy Father is going to take disciplinary action agaist Cardinal Mahoney for his disobedience to the Church?

I am going to pray that your god grants you the wisdom to understand Mahoney's divinely inspired plan.

I have just finished an autobiography of Mother Angelica, and it mentions the brouhaha that took place between her and Mahony when she criticized something he had written on the Eucharist. Mahony got into such a stint and demanded time and again that Mother apologize for her remarks. You just can't have the laity criticizing the bishops, you know.

And yet, time and again Mahony and his ilk snub their noses at the Church. The hypocrisy stinks to the heavens. Heterodox Catholics pipe in all the time whenever we criticize the Bishops because, well, you're just not allowed to criticize our good shepherds. But nary a peep is uttered when they in turn disregard the Vatican and/or Church teachings.

Four more years, friends. Four more years.

Reminds me of a certain archbishop of the recent past who questioned the "ecclesiology" of a Catholic group for proceeding with their radio apostolate, even though as bishop of the area, he'd refused to give his approval. But when it came to his own lack of obedience to Rome, he said that personally he didn't see eye to eye with the Holy Father on several issues.

But when it came to his own lack of obedience to Rome, he said that personally he didn't see eye to eye with the Holy Father on several issues.

Ah yes, reminds me one of my Jesuit high school teachers. He was always using some phrase like "loyal disagreement" or something along those lines as a euphamism for "willful disobedience."

Quick name three mafias that "don't exist."

1) La Cosa Nostra

2) The Boston Irish

3) The Lavender priesthood

They're all olive oil importers, or something.

Cardinal Mahoney is a graduate of St. John's Seminary - it was not only known for it's openess to homosexuality in the 1970's - many students used to go the to gay bars in Hollywood on the weekends.

It also taught Catholic Americans should not rely so heavily on Rome. Something our HS Senior religion teacher, a classmate of Mahoney's at St. John's and now an Arch-Bishop in L.A., specifically told us in regards to Humanae Vitae when we questioned him on his view of contraception, which did not follow Church teaching.

Another religion teacher at our school, and a fellow classmate of Mahoney's, recently found guilty of "Child molestation", also taught contraception was okay.

Funny how Mahoney ran to Rome when he wanted Mother Angelica rebuked. His document on the Eucharist did make it questioned whether he believes in the Real Presence. But then, that may depend on what "Is" is???

I attend the parish that Cardinal Mahoney's brother currently resides. He is retired, but helps out with the Masses and Confessions when he is around. He spends a good part of his time in warmer weather during the winter months. Anyway, when he first arrived I was quite shocked at how judgmental and sharp he would be during his sermons. He was and still is a bit short and nasty to the alter servers. I feel sorry for them when they have to serve at his Masses. At first, I couldn't stand him, but through the years, I've learned to accept his shortness as impatience due to old age and often find myself praying for him.

He is very much like his brother, the Cardinal, in that he seems to dislike the laws coming from Rome. Of all things, I find going to Confession to him to be a pleasant experience. He seems calmer and not at all judgmental....or maybe he's asleep, not sure which.

I like your post, Paul, but I'm a little confused. If you're writing an "autobiography" of Mother Angelica, shouldn't your name be Mother Angelica?? :)

I heard a story that when His Eminence was visiting my alma mater, regrettably TAC is in his domain, his only comment was that his coat of arms was incorrect. The number of tassels denoted an archbishop, but he was a Cardinal, so my school had to change it. A little insight into what he cares about, himself.

Would that be, Hoodlum, Mahoney's divinely inspired plan to normalize the molestation of boys in his archdiocese?

When googling "Mahony" and "homosexual", I found about 14000 pages.
Now my question is: Is this man himself a pederast?
I am ashamed to share the same religion (I don't say "faith") as this man.
I believe he must be -at least- dismissed and excomunicated, and jailed.
Seen from France, the paedophilia scandal in the US is a disaster for the Catholics here since clerics ans faithfuls are now ridiculed and despised though the abuses by French priests were limited to a few cases.
How a great number of honest and devout people owe their shame to a small number of lost souls like Card. Mahony and his mignons.
Jesus thy Kingdom come to cleanse this filth.
