Rocco is reporting "Mutiny in the Big Apple."

Long-simmering tensions among a broad cross-section of the archdiocese's priests broke into the open today with the circulation of an anonymous letter under the authorship of a group calling itself "A Committee of Concerned Clergy for the Archdiocese of New York." Saying that, "At no time has the relationship between the Ordinary and the priests of the Archdiocese been so fractured and seemingly hopeless as it is now," the authors have urged their confreres to lodge "a formal vote of 'NO Confidence'" (emphases original) in Cardinal Edward M. Egan, who became archbishop in 2000. Using strong language throughout the 950-word missive, the authors allege a widespread finding that Egan's relationship with his priests has been "defined by dishonesty, deception, disinterest and disregard."

"Sadly, it is evident that this Cardinal is unable to deal with the complexities, problems and challenges of an Archdiocese of the magnitude and diversity of New York. For these reasons and more, the Priests of the Archdiocese of New York must express a vote of NO CONFIDENCE. Such a vote would encourage the Papal Nuncio and the Holy Father to strongly consider accepting the Cardinal’s resignation in April,2007, when he reaches the age of retirement, rather than at a future and uncertain date before his 80th birthday, as can often be the case with retiring Cardinals. The search for a new Archbishop should begin sooner rather than later."

I am not much of a fan of anonymous committees encouraging secretive votes against their bishop.

In other news a press release from Archdiocese of Boston announces.

Cardinal Seán O'Malley will host a press conference tomorrow morning to make a major announcement, sharing key news regarding an important step forward in the continued rebuilding and strengthening of the Church in Boston.

...Please Note: Immediately following Cardinal O'Malley's press conference, all media are welcome to remain for a photo opportunity and to cover the procession of the sacred relic of the heart of St. John Vianney outside the grounds of St. John's Seminary - located next to Peterson Hall - to a statue of St. John Vianney and to the entrance of St. John's Seminary Chapel.

"Rosco is reporting ..."

What does a dim-witted Georgia sheriff know about the Archdiocese of New York?

;)

Tom Haessler once wrote that anonymous complaints have been relegated to the wastebasket for several decades at the CDF. I expect the same careful attention will be given to this "no confidence" vote by the Papal Nuncio.

It is true that the priests of the archdiocese of NY have never had confidence in Cardinal Egan (certainy not like they did in Cardinal O'Connor). They have said he is not responsive to their concerns; they cannot even schedule an appointment to see him. Frankly, I'd love to see Egan replaced and soon.

Boss, I reckon them Duke Boys are behind this.

"defined by dishonsety, deception, disinterest, and disregard."

You know they put a lot of thought into the issue when they bother to alliterate their complaints.

The problem is, this makes two diocese in the us--to my knowlege--where priests have given complaints and a voteof no confidence in their ordinary.

Neither of them were LA or Orange county.

This makes me suspicious.

The ministry of priests is an extension of that of the bishop, not vice versa. The bishop is not there to facilitate the ministry of priests, rather the priests are there on behalf of the bishop.

I think these guys may suffer from a deficient ecclesiology

THE SOONER WE LOSE EGAN THE SOONER THE CHURCH OF NY WILL REJOICE. THE MAN HAS DONE NOTHING THAT I CAN SEE TO BENEFIT THE CHURCH OF NY IN THE LAST 6 YEARS.

They used the word "diversity", so that already makes them suspect.

Anonymous complaints should be filed in the round file under "g" for garbage but in this case it is particularly disturbing because this letter follows on the heels of the incarceration of a former pastor for pilfering hundreds of thousands of dollars from his parish (a very popular priest with the presbyterate) and another one caught on tape leaving a hotel room with the married parish secretary. I got an inkling that this letter was written by a few of their classmates who somehow believe Cardinal Egan should have done more to protect these men from the public eye. Its nonsense plain and simple.

As for Cardinal Egan doing nothing for the Church of NY, that is simply untrue and a misrepresentation. The Arch of NY was on the verge of complete financial collapse and bankruptcy when he arrived. He was forced to make difficult decisions and was scorned for it but in the end, the Arch of NY is better able to care for the faithful and the community because of the leadership he provided and the lay leaders he brought with him. Regretfully, a few disgruntled individuals who feel their complaints were not given enough attention are now throwing another temper tantrum like spoiled little...Well, you get the point...
