There is just something quite ironic about the Pope's talk and the reaction of firebombing an Anglican church in the West Bank city of Nablus. Memo to Muslims - Anglican's are in schism from the Pope. But then again there is only some much information you can put into a Palestinian textbooks when there are just so many tidbits from the Protocol of the Elders of Zion to put there instead.
This is what the Call to Action and the National Catholic Reporter crowd call interfaith dialog. After all burning the Pope in effigy is something they can all agree on.

I am not sure what the signs say but I am sure they say something like "I read the Pope's speech at the at University of Regensburg and I enjoyed it. I liked his reference to surah 2, 256 which reads: 'There is no compulsion in religion.' While I disagree that Jesus was more than a prophet I enjoyed Benedict's critique of the liberal theology of the 19th and 20th centuries that 'ushered in a second stage in the process of dehellenization." Also interesting is his explanation of how modernity is trying to reduce the field of theology to be not one of the "sciences." Truly as he says 'it is man himself who ends up being reduced.' I can see how the dialogue he quoted between Byzantine emperor Manuel II Paleologus and who he called an "educated" and "learned" Persian could be misconstrued by those whose source of news is only by headlines, but I really appreciated the distinctions he made about violent conversions and that God is transcendent."
A year ago I don't remember the media reporting the Pope's speech with some Muslim communities during World Youth Day in Cologne. I don't remember headlines like "Pope calls Muslims friends". "Pope affirms the values of mutual respect, solidarity and peace," or "Pope calls for cultivation of optimism and hope."

What always fascinates me is the striking similarity between such apparently opposite groups: Muslims and liberals. They both shriek 'intolerance!' and start riots when you tell them the truth!

It seems to me that the only reason the offending portions of the speech were brought up was because the Pope was reading this dialog between Manuel II and the educated Persian, and while reading it he began to think about the incompatibility of coersion and reason and the necessary compatibility of faith and reason. Whether or not an accurate depiction of Islam is presented is actually irrelevant to his argument.
