There is just something quite ironic about the Pope's talk and the reaction of firebombing an Anglican church in the West Bank city of Nablus. Memo to Muslims - Anglican's are in schism from the Pope. But then again there is only some much information you can put into a Palestinian textbooks when there are just so many tidbits from the Protocol of the Elders of Zion to put there instead.

This is what the Call to Action and the National Catholic Reporter crowd call interfaith dialog. After all burning the Pope in effigy is something they can all agree on.

I am not sure what the signs say but I am sure they say something like "I read the Pope's speech at the at University of Regensburg and I enjoyed it. I liked his reference to surah 2, 256 which reads: 'There is no compulsion in religion.' While I disagree that Jesus was more than a prophet I enjoyed Benedict's critique of the liberal theology of the 19th and 20th centuries that 'ushered in a second stage in the process of dehellenization." Also interesting is his explanation of how modernity is trying to reduce the field of theology to be not one of the "sciences." Truly as he says 'it is man himself who ends up being reduced.' I can see how the dialogue he quoted between Byzantine emperor Manuel II Paleologus and who he called an "educated" and "learned" Persian could be misconstrued by those whose source of news is only by headlines, but I really appreciated the distinctions he made about violent conversions and that God is transcendent."

A year ago I don't remember the media reporting the Pope's speech with some Muslim communities during World Youth Day in Cologne. I don't remember headlines like "Pope calls Muslims friends". "Pope affirms the values of mutual respect, solidarity and peace," or "Pope calls for cultivation of optimism and hope."

Mark Shea has been firing on all cylinders with these posts"Two Complete Different Pictures, "First, recover your faith", and Thin-skinned Brittle Islamic Folk Have Hysterics Again.

American Papist has a good roundup on this issue and as you would expect Kathy Shaidle is all over this topic with many fine posts.

Not that I want him to, but seeing as it's going to happen anyway, Benedict should go ahead and grovel out an apology and proclaim to the world what a peace-loving group of murderers Muslims are.

That way he can get on with the bland, nothing papacy he's chosen to have since those heady days when we thought he might actually do something to shore up the faith and put the Church back on track.

Muslims don't differentiate between Catholics and Anglicans. During the cartoon riots, they burned SWISS flags...even though Denmark was supposed to be the target of their ire.

I don't think the Pope should apologize. The truth hurts, and reacting to his statement about violence...by being violent does nothing to disprove what they are mad about.

No. No. No! People are confused. The muslims are outraged because they have progressed from swords to manchine guns (and bombs) to force conversions!

B16 has a 'bland nothing papacy'???!!

This kind of grumpy critic probably lambasts liberals who claim to be 'loyal dissenters' never spotting the beam in his own eye.

Get on side and support the Pope.

Curt Jester,

Thanks for the best laugh I've had all day; in fact, the only laugh.

WF, you're an ignorant moron.

Since 1972 the number of innocent civilans, women and children butchered by these peace-loving followers of Mohammed the warrior could fill a book--by some counts it is in the hundreds of thousands with most victims being Christians and Jews, although in Asia Hindus and Buddhists have also felt the "gentle edge" of Mohammed's sword. Someone had better wake up this moronic, ostrich head-in-the-sand Western Civilization.

Deacon John,
Interesting point on Hindus and Buddhists.
Anyone heard comments from them?

What always fascinates me is the striking similarity between such apparently opposite groups: Muslims and liberals. They both shriek 'intolerance!' and start riots when you tell them the truth!
The temptation is to step out of the way and let them devour one another, but, sigh, we are Catholics and want their eternal salvation.Right?

Let us do a novena to Our Lady of Victory, now called Our Lady of the Rosary not to offend anyone. Her feast day is on the anniversary of the victory at Lepanto, October 7th. It was the last time Christendom beat back the barbarian Muslims with the power of the rosary.

There is a definite truth in what the Byzantine emperor the Pope quoted was saying given that Constantinople fell to the Turks a mere fifty years after the dialogue. The military expansion of Islam in the Mediterranean world is an incontrovertible fact.
We must not ignore the truth but recognize it wherever it appears not matter how uncomfortable or politically incorrect:

"Do not recognize truth on the basis of men; rather, recognize the truth first, then you will recognize the holders of truth." Thus, the cognizant rational person recognizes the truth, and then examines the statement itself. If it is true, he accepts it regardless of whether the person who made the statement is a liar or an honest person. Indeed, he may even strive to seize the truth from the statements of those who are in error, knowing full well that gold is mined among dirt and sand.

Al-Ghazali a 12th century Muslim Scholar from his work the Rescuer from Error. This was towards the end of Islam's Golden Age when it interacted with Greek thought.

More here from Al-Ghazali with commentary:

It seems to me that the only reason the offending portions of the speech were brought up was because the Pope was reading this dialog between Manuel II and the educated Persian, and while reading it he began to think about the incompatibility of coersion and reason and the necessary compatibility of faith and reason. Whether or not an accurate depiction of Islam is presented is actually irrelevant to his argument.

Curt Jester,

The Anglicans aren't "in schism". They're heretics with invalid Orders.

Dean,

I have always wondered the same thing. Here is a good article about their alliance.

As Ordered by Pope Pius XI before being revised by John XXIII and then Paul VI for Ecumanical purposes (I guess because we all worship the same God????), let us pray for those still involved in the "Darkness of Islamism"

Act of Consecration of the Human Race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Most sweet Jesus, Redeemer of the human race, look down upon us humbly prostrate before Thine altar. We are Thine, and Thine we wish to be; but to be more surely united with Thee, behold, each one of us freely consecrates himself today to Thy most Sacred Heart.

Many indeed have never known Thee; many too, despising Thy precepts, have rejected Thee. Have mercy on them all, most merciful Jesus, and draw them to Thy Sacred Heart.

Be Thou King, O Lord, not only of the faithful who have never forsaken Thee, but also of the prodigal children who have abandoned Thee; grant that they may quickly return to their Father's house lest they die of wretchedness and hunger.

Be Thou King of those who are deceived by erroneous opinion, or whom discord keeps aloof, and call them back to the harbor of truth and the unity of faith, so that soon there may be but one flock and one Shepherd.

Be Thou King of all those who are still involved in the darkness of idolotry or of Islamism, and refuse not to draw them all into the light and kingdom of God.

Turn Thine eyes of mercy towards the children of that race, once Thy chosen people. Of old, they called down upon themselves the Blood of the Savior; may It now descend upon them as a laver of redemption and of life.

Grant , O Lord, to Thy Church assurance of freedom and immunity from harm; give peace and order to all nations, and make the earth resound from pole to pole with one cry: Praise be to the Divine Heart that wrought our salvation; to It be glory and honor forever. Amen.
Pope Pius XI
Feast of Christ the King

What's really ironic is that most Anglican clergy in the West these days have a lower view of Jesus and traditional Christianity than the Moslems do.

But who's bitter?.......

Janice,
You have the eloquence and class of Roseanne Barr.

muslim is so united, western is so liberal. sometime too liberal is not good. if Davinci code is talking about islam god!! sony picture studio get burned around the world. the muslim is sososoososo mad when they listend to the pope speech. that's why they use their power, power to unite all the muslim in the world to demonstrate, to burn pope effigy. this is their courage to fully support their God no matter what happened, we cannot blame them bcos they loved their god sos sosososossoso much. in some cases we just have to learn from them. If we learn little bit from them sony's Davince code won't have such big mouth.. Sony picture is damn lucky to face with Jesus. if sony picture face with Mohd ???????? sony prepare to buy heavy insurance bcos u get burn.........
