Dirty Dancing Apologist

PATRICK SWAYZE has blasted movies like THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST and THE DA VINCI CODE for giving religion a cynical slant. The DIRTY DANCING star, who has a keen interest in spirituality, fears controversial films will leave the world with no religion or faith to turn to. He says, "I believe in a higher power. I've studied Eastern philosophies, and I've studied the Koran. We've devalued everything worth believing in. Now we're tearing into religion. "A line should be drawn. The Last Temptation of Christ. And The Da Vinci Code borders on that. "I was glued to the book, but afterwards I thought, 'Oh my Lord. Now we're tearing into God and our faith.' Are we going to be turning into a reality show too? I certainly hope not."

Patrick was raised Catholic, but seems to be into the healing power of crystals and Buddhism, so unfortunately his saying "our faith" doesn't have much of a dividing line.

I guess Catholicism wasn't really compatible with the Hollywood lifestyle.

I will take my culture allies wherever I can find them. Mr. Swayze realizes something is amiss when entertainment can insult religion and get away with it. Kudos for him!

Beware any Hollywood star (or many people in general) who wear their religion on their sleeves...they are usually in for a public fall a few months or years later.

Most of these Hollywood actors and actresses have some real demons haunting their souls...being in the limelight as they are it is hard to stay grounded in the realities of life.

Take Mel Gibson as a recent example. The guy has been haunted for years by alcoholism and a bad temper, and it looks like it has reared its ugly head for Gibson yet again. It doesn't make him a 'bad Catholic' but it does make him human like the rest of us, and it is obvious that he is running from something that haunts his personal life.

The problem is when guys like Gibson hold themselves (as he has in the past) to being on a higher plateau than the rest of us in humanity...the 'fall from grace' is that much greater. Gibson spent the better part of a few months (when the Passion came out) vehemently denying his anti-Sematism and alcohol problems...yet the fire water seems to have shown Gibson's true thoughts.

I pray for these people in Hollywood, the deck is usually stacked against them from the beginning.

I had the time of my life reading that. :)

Don't be too hard on Swayze. He's at least clued-in enough to realize that the sacred should be treated as sacred, which is more than can be said for most of the Hollywood crowd...

I don't believe he has "found the time of his life."

At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, it's almost as if the entertainment industry is softing up its audience for some hoped-for future condemnation of anything even remotely smacking of religion. It's the "opiate of the people," don't you know. Far from it; it tends to give people a backbone to fight back. Why else would so many dictatorships---most notably, Communist ones---outlaw religion?

At any rate, add my voice to the others who are giving kudos to Swayze. He's seen the elephant.

Okay, let's take a deep breath and think back to Roadhouse. I've been looking for an excuse to post this on a blog:

"Open up your heart and let the Patrick Swayze Christmas in; we'll gather at the roadhouse with our next of kin; and santa can be our regular saturday night thing; We'll decorate our barstools and gather round and sing.

Oh, let's have a Patrick Swayze Christmas this year!
Or we'll tear your throat out and kick you in the ear!

It's my way or the highway, this Christmas at my ba-ha-haar.
I'll have to smash your kneecaps if you bastards touch my car!
I got the word that Santa has been stealing from the till.
I think that that right jolly old elf better make out his will, ohh,

Oh, let's have a Patrick Swayze Christmas, one and all.
And this can be the haziest...
This can be the laziest...
This can be the Swayziest
Christmas of them aaallllllllll! "

..sniff..
Gosh, Chris, that just brought a tear to my eye. How beautiful. (/sarcasm off)

Mmm. MST3k goodness. Yummy.. You know I have a gumball machine and some really old carseats.. And I've been kinda. lonely. Just a little.

I do agree though. Take your allies where you can find them. Andhope forconversion isn't a bad thing.
