Spain could soon become the first country in the world to give chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and other great apes some of the fundamental rights granted to human beings under a law being proposed by members of the ruling Socialist coalition.

Explore the Garden of Eden!
Visit your Ancestors!
See St. Nicholas and tell him what you really want for Christmas!
Pray just like Jesus....

And do all of this without leaving the friendly confines of the South Room of the Ministry Center!

Join Father Michael to learn the primitive human spirituality of shamanism! Shamanism is not a religion or a cult. It is a spiritual methodology as old as humanity itself. So much of the Bible and our Catholic spiritual tradition are rooted in shamanism, but we have forgotten this simple, human spirituality.

So, enrich your life — not just your spiritual life but your whole life by exploring a different reality. It is the reality that Christ called the Kingdom of God, and you can visit it on Tuesdays, the 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th of June from 7-8:30pm in the South Room of the Ministry Center.

Father Michael will teach the basics of shamanic spirituality: spiritual cosmology, sonic driving, journeying, working with spirit guides and teachers and healing — all from such a good, Catholic perspective that the Pope himself would be honored to lay on the floor next to you to retrieve your lost power animal!

Most people find this form of meditation easier to do lying down, so you will probably want to bring a blanket or mat. Also, bring paper and pen to journal your experiences. If you have any questions, please call Father Michael at 847-825-3153.

Unfortunately not a parody, but a story reported by Matt C. Abbot on Father Michael Wanda, associate pastor of Mary Seat of Wisdom Parish in Park Ridge, Ill. The Catholic Encyclopediasays about the word shaman that it is "a word derived by Bantzaroff from Manchu saman, i.e., an excited or raving man." The definition seems to be right on the money in this case. I find it pretty funny that he says the Pope would be honored to lie down next to you you to retrieve your lost power animal. Now I know the Vatican's translation service is slow, but I think I might have heard about a Wednesday audience about power animals. Though in this case I think the pope if he were to call a power animal he might call a Rottweiler for Fr. Wanda instead of a nice fluffy kitty of which the Pope prefers. It is no surprise that Shaman starts with sham.

Is a "lost power animal" one of those Energizer bunnies that kept going and going and going until it went under the couch where you can't reach it?

I was a parishoner at Mary Seat in the mid 90s. It was groovalicious back then, and it looks groovy today. I taught CCD there before my kids were born.

But this is funky! And the priest running it is young. Did he miss JPII?

sonic driving

I drive to Sonic all the time. I usually get the extra large cheese Coney and the jalapeno poppers.

To whom it may concern:
In reference to Fr. Wanda - You have no right to insult someone who is trying to bring us closer to Christ. You really should have contacted Fr. Wanda first and asked to speak with him. I think once you had this opportunity, you would have realized that what he's trying to teach makes perfect sense.
For your information - Shaman means healer. It's about ones desire to become whole. It's about healing ones own soul and having the ability to heal others. Hmm...Christ healed. Christ cared about others souls.
It's sad - the Church doesn't have problems with Fr. Wanda teaching about shamanism. But people that call themselves Christians are the first to complain and discredit someone, all based on the fact that they don't understand, nor do they want to understand or be open to new possibilities of finding Christ in our lives.
Again - at least have respect for Fr. Wanda. Call him and ask questions. Try to understand what he is trying to teach. If you have at least done this and you still don't agree with his teachings, keep it to yourself.
We can't all agree on everything. But one common denominator is God. Why do we always forget that. It doesn't matter what religion we come from.
Respectfully,
J. Barczak

Hello,

Fr. Wanda is in grave error teaching this type of class on Shamanism. I'm sure he means no harm but he is on a power search rather than a Truth search . Not all supernatural events are good. There is both good and evil and anytime someone tries to "call on spirits" (other than THE HOLY SPIRIT) they are in store for opening up a door to the occult. Pray that this veil will be lifted from his spiritual eyes, ears and heart. Below is a description of shamanism.

Description. Shamanism is an occult path claiming contact with supernatural entities for a variety of religious or, today, even secular purposes. Traditional shamanism is where the shaman functions as healer, spiritual leader, and mediator between the spirits and people. Shamanistic psychotherapy, a novel form of modern fringe psychology, is where shamanistic techniques are employed allegedly to produce "psychospiritual integration," explore the unconscious, contact one’s "higher self," and so on. Shamanistic medicine includes the application of animistic and various ancient witchcraft techniques to health care. It may involve either shamanism itself as a means to health and enlightenment (shaman initiation and following the shaman’s "life path"), or the varied use of specific shamanistic techniques in conjunction with a particular health program (e.g., visualization, altered states of consciousness, dream work, or the use of "power animals," which are spirits that appear in the form of animals, birds, or other creatures in order to instruct the shaman).
Founder. Unknown; the practice is found in almost all cultures throughout history. In the United States, the Native American religious tradition is representative.
How does it claim to work? Modern shamanism claims its methods will bring personal power, spiritual enlightenment, greater harmony with nature, psychological insight, and physical healing.
Scientific evaluation. Because of its occult nature, science has little to conclude concerning shamanistic claims. However, the methods and occult powers of shamans are studied parapsychologically, as is true for the spiritual cousins of shamans such as psychic surgeons, mediums, channelers, and Eastern gurus.
Examples of occult potential. Spiritism, spirit possession, kundalini arousal, psychic healing, and various occult practices.
Major problems. Shamanism leads to spirit possession and other forms of occult bondage. For example, in shamanistic healing the acquiring of true health demands both the practitioner and patient to be "energized" by his or her "power animal," or spirit guide. Possession by one or more spirits for empowerment, enlightenment, personal health maintenance, and healing abilities is fundamental.
Biblical/Christian evaluation. Shamanistic practices involve pagan methods and beliefs that are forbidden (Exodus 20:5-4; Deuteronomy 18:9-12).
Potential dangers. Temporary insanity, demon possession, and tremendous physical suffering are some of the effects. Those treated with shamanistic techniques or methods may become converted to the occult.
Note: It should be said that using shamanistic techniques and methods in any given program (e.g., visualization, altered states of consciousness, sensory manipulation, dream work) is not equivalent to following the shamanistic path. Shamanistic methods can be used independently in a variety of ways; they may or may not introduce one to pursuing the path of the shaman. Shamanism also bears a significant relationship to modern cultism. In the last generation the revival of new American cults and religions illustrates a number of shamanistic motifs
