Asta la veto, baby

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced Wednesday that he will veto a bill that would allow gay marriages in California.

Schwarzenegger said the legislation, given final approval Tuesday by lawmakers, would conflict with the intent of voters when they approved a ballot initiative five years ago. Proposition 22 prevents California from recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states or countries.

"We cannot have a system where the people vote and the Legislature derails that vote," the governor's press secretary, Margita Thompson, said in a statement. "Out of respect for the will of the people, the governor will veto (the bill)." [Source]

The idea of Arnold just "vetoing" something just seems tame. Perhaps terminating the bill with extreme prejudice or destroying its advancement would be better. Well I guess that answers the question about whether Gov. Schwarzenegger has any further political aspirations. Or maybe I should just be satisfied regardless of his motivation, especially considering a previous interview of his.

GS: You're a Catholic, how do you reconcile your political positions on abortion, on gay rights, on the death penalty. There opposed to the positions of the Catholic Church - how do you reconcile that:

That's great! I never had any sleepless nights over my political positions either.

This man is loopy. In the same article he (or his spokesman) says that he thinks this change (i.e., same-sex marriage) should come at the hands of the judiciary rather than the legislature!

Look, whatever you believe about same-sex 'marriage' (I think it is a grotesque abomination), there's an issue of process here. Such fundamental change as re-defining marriage cannot be done by unelected judges and be consistent with the principles of a representative democracy. The fact that the Calif legislature voted for this, rather than its being directed by a court, is the only feature of procedural and constitutional legitimacy in the whole ugly affair.

The fact that the 'Governator' publicly asserts that he would prefer that such abominable change come through the courts is simply testimony to his uncertain grasp of our principles of self-governance. He did the right thing here, of course, but for the wrong reason. If the circumstances change ever so slightly, this 'Catholic' will do the wrong thing with as much, or more, fervor and muddled thinking as he evinces here. Calif deserves this guy.

Owwwww...
I'm in California. Noone deserves such an awful idiot... he's setting up the same situation we now have nationally... if you're against abortion you have to vote for folks like Bush who have almost none of your other interests at heart...
Same will be true it looks like for CA. where if you are against gay marriage you'll have to also vote for Republicans who will pillage the state for their fee...

In the end it's impossible not to conclude that

NO MATTER WHO'S IN POWER NOONE IN SACRAMENTO HAS ANY INTEREST AT ALL IN PROTECTING MY INTERESTS...AT ALL

I don't know what to think of the Governator's latest stance. On the one hand, I am glad he vetoed the bill and he is correct about its conflict with the "will of the people." Of course the bill only got a bare minimum necessary for initial passage to begin with - so the veto should stand. On the other hand he is a bundle of contradictory statements. He has no understanding of our system of government and his politics are about as coherent as the version of Catholic faith he allegedly adheres to ("that's easy, I don't lose any sleep over at night.") I say, next time around, don't elect a muscle-bound idiot actor to stand in as governor unless he has some real qualifications (like a basic and elemntary understanding of logic!)

I'm in CA, too, and I second Dave's sentiments above :) Hey, we didn't all vote for this guy!

It's loopy that Schwarzenegger said the change should come through the courts rather than the legislature - but in CA it's illegal for the legislature to pass something contradictory to a popular initiative (in this case, Prop 22 passed in 2000). He gave this as a reason he's vetoing the bill and suggested that same-sex marriage suppporters get their own popular initiative passed (which doesn't have much hope of success, at least now).

My husband is dreading any future political ambitions Scharzenegger has and spent ten minutes at breakfast this morning telling me that he'd vote for a milk cow before casting his ballot for him. If the Republicans think they can get his vote with such a specimen, think again.

I have an idea... After he vetos the bill, he takes it out to the outskirts of town with a rocket launcher and blows it up. :)

"You haff ben vetonated!" :)

Tony does a great Austrian-blog accent.

For those mentally grooming Ahnold for president, please dump that thought. Even if he was a natural-born citizen of the U.S., (which I believe is still a qualification for prez.), I'll be the third to attach the "loopy" adjective.

Look. The guy freely admits to popping steroids like candy for decades... and people want HIS hand on any button of significance??? Doesn't chronic steroid use lead to... things?
He *was* also a huge recreational drug user an extraordinarily promiscuous fornicator. Boy his Kennedy wife must REALLY have cleaned him up(!)

or not...

Yes the Greek Captcha is a joke
