Full scale assault

Spain's social revolution has continued with the Spanish Parliament granting couples the right to no-fault, fast-track divorces.

In contrast to the fierce reaction that greeted legislation allowing gay marriage, and despite muted opposition from the Catholic church, the changes to Spain's divorce laws have caused barely a ripple.

The new law - which the Government says is needed to bring Spanish laws "up to date with modern society" - removes the requirement that couples be separated for a year before a divorce can be granted. When the law comes into effect, only three months of separation will be required.

This story did get less attention than legalizing same-sex marriage even though it is also very scandalous. Though it is consistent with the approval of same-sex marriage. Why not do a full scale barrage against the God-given institution of marriage? Spain didn't go in for half measures and while this is sad legislation it fits in with whole scheme.

I wonder what the Spanish Muslims reaction to this is? It is ironic that after an act of terrorism that lead to an act of appeasement in the voter booth- results in laws that can only make many Muslims see the West as becoming even more decadent.

Not long now before they're back to shooting the Priests, raping the nuns, and burning the Churches... We must pray that another Generalísimo Franco arises.

A Muslim man can divorce his wife by saying "I divorce you. I divorce you. I divorce you." A hot topic amongst Muslim leagal scholars is whether it counts if the message is delivered electronically via a cell phone or an email.

So, no, this isn't going to outrage any Muslims.

I absolutely love Spain-- love the people, the food, the Catholic culture. It breaks my heart to see this. God have mercy on them, and us.

The ancient murderers of the so-called Abraham Lincoln Brigade will rejoice over their belated victory at the next reunion. The thousands and thousands of Spanish Civil War martyrs abide in eternal salvation. Who is to be emulated in Spain in 2005? Agree: Franco was the savior of his country. Not only did he defeat Stalinism, he kept Spain out of WWII.

Danby: So THAT's where the creators of "Beetlejuice" got that! Say the name Beetlejuice three times, and the evil one appears.

It's quite a shame that Spain hasn't looked at the deterioration of American culture from the 60's to present day -- starting with, I believe, no fault divorce. It appears they want the whole snootful at one time.

Lord have mercy on us all.

What a selfish culture we're all turning into. May God have mercy on us all. We're gunna need it.

Silly Americans! Terrorism cannot be beaten with guns or violence, but rather with gay marriages.

Spain has far bigger problems than gay marriage, primary among them being its rock-bottom birth rate. If Spanish conservatives wish to preserve their nation and their culture, they should spend their time procreating, not protesting.

First off, Spain is in trouble, but it does not need another Franco!

Second of all, slow birthrates, might be a blessing in the long run, because surely it is not the liberals that are reproducing...God willing in a generation or two, we'll have a generation ready to reset Spain on it's tracks.

El Cid has left the building....

Yes, Spain needs a new Franco. This Spain looks more like a province of France, rather than the once proud bearer of Western arms to the East. I pity the heroes of Spain, when they see what an awful mess the nation they fought for has become. St. James the Moorslayer, pray for us.

Seeker email:

Well sure, the birth rate could correct itself in the long run, provided that Spain doesn't open its doors to third world immigrants in a misguided attempt to inject some youth into its economy who then proceed to outbreed the natives, thus destroying Spanish culture and the Spanish people in a single stroke.

Good luck with that. Personally, I'd rather see the birth rate rise now so as to secure the existence of a unique people and their culture--even if that does mean that we'll have to deal with more liberals (gasp!) in the future.

Though it may cheer you a bit to consider that nothing nudges a person into social conservativism like suddenly having children to care for.

Long live Franco!

My ex would have loved that! Thankfully there's no such thing in the UK as a no-fault divorce, and so she has had to bear the brunt of her adultery in the court documents. She wanted to get away with it Scott free (ironic given that was the name of the man she cheated with and went to live with) and avoid criticism. How much more easy it would have been had no-fault existed (though she did use an internet service to avoid tricky face-to-face deliberation with a solicitor).

No-fault divorce gives people licence to behave as they wish without any fear of public scrutiny or humiliation. Adultery will become the norm as it becomes easy to file for divorce first no a no-fault basis when caught and spared the humiliation.

It's become far too easy to wind up a marriage using internet divorce services, no-fault, no-win no-fee and the net result is an all-out assault on the sanctitiy of marriage and the disposable view taken of it.
