I am in Catholic nerd heaven. While watching EWTN Live I just heard Fr. Fessio asking Fr. Pacwa if he had seen something going around called Humanae Vitaemins and Vitamin B16. This is an obvious reference to my Now with B16! post. Plus it was cool seeing two Jesuits who both love the Holy Father and are faithful to the Church. Though I was worried if an accident happened this would wipe the majority of faithful Jesuits. Okay that was a cheap Jesuit shot, but Fr. Fessio made a similar comment at the end of the show in mentioning the fact that there were two Jesuits who love the Pope in the same room.

The Curt Jester
A former atheist who after spending forty years in the wilderness finds himself with both astonishment and joy a member of the Catholic Church. This blog presents my hopefully humorous and sometimes serious take on things religious, political, and whatever else crosses my mind.

It would only wipe out two thirds. One would remain: Cardinal Avery Dulles.
Congratulations! It's a small Catholic world. I missed the reference to your great post, but I heard the "two Jesuits" remark and thought the same thing - there are so many, many unUSUAL Jesuits in the world.
Pardon the ignorance of a fairly new Catholic (two years this Pentecost vigil), but what happened with Jesuits? In things I've read from the early twentieth century or earlier, Jesuits seemed to have a reputation as hardcore defenders of the faith. But anything I read from the last twenty years or so suggests a more problematic reputation; even when I hear a Jesuit praised, it's often accompanied with a comment about their not being like other Jesuits today. What went wrong? (Assuming, that is, that there is something wrong, and not just a few bad apples making everyone look bad.)
Congratulations on the EWTN mention.
LOL! My brother watched the same show, and he made the following post:
http://angrytwins.blogspot.com/2005/05/humane-vitamin.html
If only I had cable ... that is so cool! Congrats!
Suzanne,
Yes, unfortunately the Jesuits have become "progressive" in the US. I can't speak for the rest of the world but here in the US they seemed to have abandoned the teachings of the Church and have gone wild with very unorthodox beliefs. I went to a Jesuit college and had a Jesuit priest who taught reincarnation and said he believed in it. Another didn't believe in the Immaculate Conception. Anyway, some Catholics here think that "S.J." no longer means Society of Jesus, but instead means Society of Judas. Sadly enough, it seems true.
We need to pray for the Jesuits, and implore St. Ignatius of Loyola to send a champion to reform the order.
This subject comes up a lot -- someone should really keep a list of the "good Jesuits."
Besides those mentioned already, we can also add Fr. Robert Spitzer (president of Gonzaga, fiercely pro-life) and Fr. James Schall of Georgetown.
I have had the pleasure of hearing both speak, and I assure you that they are both brilliant and orthodox priests that the Church is fortunate to have.
well? had Fr. Pacwa heard of it?
I know of one or two other faithful Jesuits not listed. There is a small cadre. The Jesuit underground. You should not be naming names. Loose lips sink ships. Secret codes only!
Mr. Jester has a link to a blog that has a list of good Jesuits: Credibility.
Now I don't know if 'Credo' has an accurate list, but nonetheless, he does have 'a list'.
He's an Aussie by the way.
Don't leave Brother Consolmagno out! Especially since we need him to keep an eye on the sky....
I was a great comment by Fr. Fessio and I immediately thought of you. The only thing I was waiting for was for him to mention "The Curt Jester"!
I was watching EWTN and heard the reference to B16 and hope more Catholics are made aware of this fantastic product.
And if you're a bargain hunter like me, remember it's free!
That would be wild if Fr. Fessio reads you. "Humanae Vitaemins" is sufficiently creative that it seems unlikely he would've come up with it himself or gotten it elsewhere.
If Joseph Pearce is reading this: you rock!
Add Fr Hugh Thwaites SJ to the list!
My (non-Catholic) roommate met Brother Consolmagno the other day. Br. Consolmagno sent him an email asking him to meet him in the cafeteria in 15 minutes. My roommate didn't know who he was, he just kept saying "it's some Jesuit Brother". When he came back he was like "the guy was really interesting...he's an astronomer." I said "was it Br. Guy Consolmagno?" My roommate said "Yeah, it was...is he famous or something?"
Apparently Br. Consolmagno is here at SCU for a while, and my roommate may be inviting him to come to a religious studies discussion group...it would be interesting to meet him.
Albertus M:
Thanks for mentioning Fr. Spitzer. I'm a Gonzaga student, and it's appalling how many times I have to remind people to put him on the list of faithful Jesuits.
There are quite a few other good Jesuits around GU, but unlike those who make lists, they haven't written any books or appeared on television. They just do things like hear your confession at 3am, or say Mass at 11pm after 4 hours of grading papers just because you asked.
But, there are definitely the ones who own a pink clerical shirt, or possibly don't own clerics at all....
Just imagine: two orthodox Jesuits, in the same room, speaking with affection about the Holy Father. My God, I thought the very fabric of space and time was about to give way! That or Sr. Joan Chittister's head would explode. I pondered whether there might be a rash of "change-oriented" sisters around the country suddenly bursting into flames (oops. That's what I thought would happen when HH B16 was elected, too!), but so far, no reports of a great conflagration. Oh, well. :-}
Before everyone gets their hopes up, just remember. The ratio is for every one good Jesuit you encounter there are at least two celebrating a Clown Mass somewhere.
Fr. Shane, now that's just scary and sad :^(
Yes, a faithful-to-the-pope Jesuit is hard to come by, but they're out there, and they're dynamite! So too are faithful sisters telltale signs: they usually wear habits and they come in 2's, a lot of them are cloistered though. My home is opened, by the way, for any who need protection from relativist waves, of which B16 spoke, that might hit them!
