Mandatory insurance coverage for birth control rejected

PIERRE, S.D. - Insurance companies in South Dakota will not be forced to cover birth control.

A bill killed unanimously by the Senate Commerce Committee would have required insurers who offer prescription drug coverage to also cover the cost of contraceptive devices and birth-control pills.

Half of unintended pregnancies end in abortion, said Kate Looby, state director of Planned Parenthood. She said SB167 would help reduce abortions in South Dakota.

"If you oppose abortion, you must support this bill," she told legislators. "This is the most important anti-abortion bill this year." [Source]

This at least is good news especially with the increased tack of pro-abortion groups wanting to ensure that every American is using contraception. That this is the most important anti-abortion bill is just a pure lie. The contraceptives they want to cover can act as abortifacients so it will not reduce the number of abortions only the number of abortions known about. A hidden chemical abortion is no abortion at all by this attitude. The other fact is that the very presence of a contraceptive attitude is what help drives those seeking an abortion. Abortion as backup contraception is what happens when one tries to disconnect sex from procreation. More contraception to prevent abortion is like throwing gasoline on a fire to put it out.

Jeff,

I am from South Dakota and this woman has been a thorn in our side for many years. Most South Dakotans don't believe Abortion is right in any from, I mean, c'mon we booted Tommy Daschle didn't we? John Thune has yet to prove himself, as does our new Representative Stephanie Herseth, but She is supported by Emily's List, and hopefully she turns from this view.

As for the birth control thing, Bull Honkey! I believe in what the truth is that babies are God's gift and its not our right to deny them, even if the situation is less than ideal. Our only safe solution to all of this is Abstinence and prayer!

"THRU FASTING PRAYER AND PENITENCE, YOUR CHURCH MUST JOURNEY LORD!"

Jeff,

Fwiw, one of my throw-away medical journals has the following quote regarding Emergency Contraception (EC): "However, as medically defined pregnancy begins with implantation, EC is not considered an abortifacient." (The Female Patient, vol 29, Nov 2004, p. 23)

Isn't that conveeeeeennnient. It wasn't a pregnancy if it didn't implant; this way either EC or other BCPs can be used with a clear conscience...

Love your blog!

Clay Randall

Jeff, I can only go by what's contained in your blog but given this evidence it appears you wouldn't recognize a "fact" if it was surgically implanted in your skull. Please keep up the blog. I'll bookmark it for when I need a laugh.

Well, Jeff, you'd better pack it in. J from nowhere in particular doesn't approve of you for some reason not specified, and that should be enough for all of us. What a dork!

It's quite true that the modern BC pill doesn't prevent ovulation. The early version contained progesterone in much higher doses and did prevent ovulation, but that was considered to have too many side effects. The low-dose pill that has been the rule for many years now prevents implantation, not ovulation.

“Well, Jeff, you'd better pack it in.”

Elinor, clearly those sleepless nights worrying about all those fallen women out there, wantonly terminating their pregnancies for their own personal enjoyment has affected your reading skills. Perhaps you’d like to read my post again, particularly the last two sentences (I don’t mind if you put your finger under the words and say ‘em out loud, just remember to wipe the screen when you’re done Sparky).

J from nowhere in particlular,

Man, you are a mean-spirited SOB, aren't you? Your contempt for people like Jeff and Elinor who respect pre-born human life is disgusting.

I'm afraid your the one who wouldn't recognize a fact if it was surgically implanted into your skull, not Jeff.

Abortion is about being able to enjoy sexual intercourse without having to worry about the possible consequence: a baby. Contraception is also about enjoying sexual intercourse without having to worry about having a baby. So the pro-abortion and pro-contraception mentalities reinforce one another.

This is a truth. So Jeff was perfectly justified in calling it a 'fact.'

“Your contempt for people like Jeff and Elinor who respect pre-born human life is disgusting.”

I find some of what they write risible and note that they don’t seem to respect that other people wish to make their own personal judgement when it comes to the matter of abortion. If you detected contempt it was directed at this religion fuelled desire to meddle in the affairs of others.
As for your second last paragraph, I suggest you carefully re-read it (devoid of ideology) and if you still can’t catch the inherent flaws in your argument then perhaps consider enrolling in an adult ed course.

“…you are a mean-spirited SOB, aren't you?”

I don’t think my mother would agree Davy.

Apparently J so deeply reverences the individual conscience that he respects that of the motorist who chooses to make his own personal decision to get roaring drunk and run him over. That this event would not gravely impair the gene pool in the matter of intelligence or cogency does not, however, ameliorate my desire to meddle in other people's affairs to the extent of wishing to prevent it.

J writes like an irreflective idiot, I concede, but I daresay he isn't altogether doing himself justice. His line of argument is quite usual among men who have either urged or acquiesced in the murder of their own children. If you could get him on another topic he might well make some sense. At the moment, however, he's just whistling past the graveyard.

"I find some of what they write risible and note that they don’t seem to respect that other people wish to make their own personal judgement when it comes to the matter of abortion."

Other people wanted to make their own personal judgement when it came to slavery and the Holocaust too. Funny how those two things existed by denying the humanity of the victims.
