Maybe she should have saved it for a more serious infraction, but in general I think I'd rather see more, not fewer, teaching sisters willing to cook up that particular old recipe.

Hopefully she can get a good job in security to tide her over until retirement.

The firing of the nun was an excessive punishment. As written, the nun's statment
is no way for an educactor to talk to someone. However, what we don't know is the tone
with which the nun spoke to the boy. And we
don't know how is was communicated to or
perceived by his parents. In all likelyhood,
the nun used it as a figure of speech or
said it humoruously or tongue-in-cheek/facetiously. The phrase "knuckle
sandwich" is usually used that way. We have such politically correct people in this land
of free speech! I'd say, at best, the nun
was guilty of being slightly insensitive.

I wonder if the sisters here in Woodbridge, Va., serve up knuckle sandwiches.

I myself have been known to threaten my children that if they don't stop misbehaving, I'll rip their arm off and beat them to death with it. In both my case and that of the nun, we seem to violate that cardinal rule of child-rearing: don't make threats that you aren't prepared to carry out if your bluff is called. At least, I don't *think* either of us was prepared to carry out our threats.

Seamus, I use that one, too, and my mother is just as appalled as HER mother was when she used to use the threat on me. :) I also occasionally threaten to "swap you for a dog, and shoot the dog."

But my favorite has always been (and the kids now recite it with me) "If you misbehave in church, you'll WISH you were on your way to a nice, safe Hell!"
