Peace group faces loss of Catholic funds

An El Paso County peace and justice group will likely lose financial support from the Colorado Springs Roman Catholic Diocese because the group will not honor Bishop Michael Sheridan's request to explicitly state opposition to abortion rights.

Sheridan, who has identified opposition of gay marriage as a fundamental issue for Catholic politicians and voters this year, also questioned the Pikes Peak Justice and Peace Commission's ties with DignityUSA, a gay Catholic group with a Colorado Springs chapter.

Sheridan's spokesman said the bishop has every right to ask potential recipients of diocese money about their moral positions.

More good news from Bishop Sheridan. It is unfortunate now that the phrase Peace and Justice has just become code words for pacifism, socialism, radical feminism, radical environmentalism, and support of abortion and a active homosexual lifestyle. To hide behind Peace and Justice and then to excuse the murder of those in the womb is an irony that should shame them. To be concerned more about consumption of resources than the murder of thousands of children each day shows a program that is out-of-whack. They trespass on military bases and through their own blood on missiles while at the same time scorning those who peacefully demonstrate at abortion clinics. Much of what these groups advocate has grains of truth in it, but unfortunately these grains never blossom into the fullness of Catholic teaching. There is a proper concern for those in poverty though there answer is usually increased government spending to solve these ills.

I have seen many of the web sites of groups like the Pikes Peak Justice and Peace and they are very similar in their advocacy. In the specific case of this group they look at the problems of the world and what is it they demonstrate about? "Protect America and the World from Bush"

I wish all Bishops would take as close a look at those who are receiving from the Church's coffers. We all need to do the same. To look at closely at those organization who we donate to to make sure they are practicing a consistently Catholic ethic.

I'm a code-breaker. =)

You should see the Missalettes that are provided in Canadian Churches. They have this little reflection at the beginning of each Sunday written by Joe Blows and it ticked me off when I saw a reflection on the Prodigal Son reduced to a reflection about the Third World forgiving North America for its consumption of resources. C'mon, what an opportunity to discuss sin and redemption ruined by the publishers of the missalette.

Are there ways to find out about the distribution of funds from a particular diocese? I'd be interested in going through my diocese's ledger and making a stink about groups whose actions are out of step with church teaching. I'm sure these groups are funded in almost every diocese.

Yes the Greek Captcha is a joke
