Missal Defense

Jesterware now presents the latest in interactive liturgical gaming. Missal Defense allows you to take out your frustrations on vapid modern songs (none dare call them hymns) such as those published by Oregon Catholic Press and GIA. The object is simply to destroy as many missals as you can before they can find their way to a pew.

Game Play
Simply press play and the cross cursor will then appear. As missals come on the screen place the cross over them and press your mouse button to blow these missals out of the skies.

The blogger at Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam suggested a game along these lines in my comment box. Some of the underlying coding is based on a Macromedia Flash sample by Sascha Wolter. Any lameness of this game is totally attributed to myself.

Amusing game from Confessions of a Recovering Choir Director on February 16, 2004 11:52 PM

Jeff Miller flexes his developing Macromedia Flash muscles with the creation of the "Missal Defense" game. [It's hymnal defense, of course, but that would ruin the pun...but perhaps he's protecting the Missal from the hymnals?]... Read More

I wish that any liturgical music ministry would take a good hard look at the music it selects. Read More

While I am not unhappy with the hymnal our parish uses, I still found this game  very funny, and especially clever of Jeff Miller of Curt Jester   fame. Yes, it is a real live arcade style game within a blog post. What will he think of next? Read More

I HATE the Gather books!
therefore
I LOVE this game!!!

I LOVE the Gather books!

But it's a fun game anyway :)

Hate Gather, love the game. What CHurch is that? it looks like ST Patrick's in Ft Worth (and 100 others, I'm sure).

Kenny,

Your correct that was the Church I used. I googled for images and that was the Church in the picture I used, take around the 1930s?

It took me a second to realize that you had created a real game. This is fun, and it fits in with the blog I'm writing now.

Comments, schmomments. Jesterware: Kicking Interactive Blogging through the Roof! :)

I scored 228 and then I thought that was enough.

What's Level Two? "Today's Missal"?

Well, I am lukewarm about Gather. We use it and it is just fine, but we don't use some songs I would really hate,so.. that tempers my feelings.
BUT ANYHOW I LOVE THIS GAME!!!
Good gravy, Jeff...this is impressive, a live game on a blog. Lots of fun, you have outdone yourself.

How do you turn it off?!

I got 188 and I have to quit before it gets silly.

Being a liturgical musician, I tend to try to use the "good old" stuff when planning Masses -- thank goodness Gather Comprehensive includes it!

GREAT GAME!

You have entirely too much time on your hands...

'thann

you are a sick man.
the church needs more like you.
I actually kind of like some of the songs in Gather, but then I too am a little sick.
nice job!

Even when I tried to let them get to a pew, the missals just kept floating, waiting to be blocked. If only real misaletts acted this way.

well, I WAS listening to Prairie Home Companion, and gave up at 820...make it 1020

I think I set the record at 1501.
My sister stopped at about 500 and she thinks I'm crazy.

Dear Jeff,

That is the old Gather Comprehensive hymnal. The new one is less distinct. It's also magenta.

I like how the missals grow larger with time without clicking with the cross. So get them early before people with bad eye sight can read them too!

All it needs now is some organ music to set the mood, say Bach's Toccata?

Played this while I was supposed to be doing my Seton schoolwork. It's good but needs some more exciting activity on the part of the missals.

I have not seen the 'Gather' books, due to the high standards of my pastor. I have read them in other churches and have wanted to rip them to shreds.

God Bless,

Dom

In correction of my first post...

Er, I HAVE seen the 'Gather' books - only not in my parish.

God Bless,

Dom

Please, please, please, please, please, can't we please blow up some other ones too; like:

Collegeville, St. Michael's Hymnal, We Celebrate, Catholic Community Hymnal, RitualSongs, Breaking Bread, Worship I, II, III, Lead Me Guide Me, JourneySongs, et. al., everything by GIA, OCP, WLP, J.S. Paluch, (aka J.S.Polluted), and any other initials you can think of!

Then, of course, the heroic Adoremus, with faithful sidekick St. Gregory's Hymnal, could come in and help save the day!

I was just wondering why you didn't like The St. Michael Hymnal? It seems really different from the others on the list.

Yes the Greek Captcha is a joke

The Curt Jester

A former atheist who after spending forty years in the wilderness finds himself with both astonishment and joy a member of the Catholic Church. This blog presents my hopefully humorous and sometimes serious take on things religious, political, and whatever else crosses my mind.

Known as "God's Jester" was a martyr for the faith and a man of wisdom, fun, tricks, poetry, song, and dance. Thus seemed an appropriate Patron Saint of this blog.
