Is the Pope a secret Trekkie?

Pope Trek

As a Trekkie the Pope has some work to do on his "Live long and prosper" hand gesture.

Well as John C. Write wrote "If Vulcans had a church, they'd be Catholics." Though they might say instead "Live long and proper and die in a state of grace.

Hat Tip to the Shrine of the Holy Wrapping for finding the original image and wanting a Star Trek theme to go with it.

Plus maybe this explains the pulpit, lectern, and chair design for the Pope's visit to America.

Update: The Shrine of the Holy Whapping has a bunch of Pope Benedict Star Trek pictures.

Great! The tiny emblem is a nice touch.

Following up on the discussion of who'd make a better Pope, Kirk or Picard, in the links above there's a parish near me whose pastor is Father James T. Kirk.

I can't wait for the day when it is finally extraordinarily defined that Kirk is cooler than Picard. While Picard and the Next Gen crowd are over there doing trust falls with the monster, Kirk is warming up the phaser.

Papa Benedetto blesses the Vatican's new starship, VSS Peter's Barque, before taking off to Vulcan to meet with T'Pau.

Actually, Vulcans are Jewish. Leonard Nimoy (Mr Spock) picked up the hand gesture from a Rabbi of his youth, who used it to signify the first letter of 'Shalom' in Hebrew. I don't know if it is a usual gesture of Rabbis, or of Rabbis in any particular denomination--any Jewish friends out there who might enlighten us?

It's a blessing gesture made with both hands by the rabbi on some kind of High Holy Day. The congregation has to turn its back. (Young Nimoy peeked.)

IIRC, the reason the congregation has to turn its back is that the blessing gesture looks like one of the names of God.

(You know, we could just look it up on Wikipedia....) *looks*

Ah. "Shin" for Shaddai. "Shin" looks sorta like a W, so it takes both hands.

My sentiments exactly. Kirk wins every time, and gets the lady!

I'm guessing "Frank" is really a shape-shifting monster that gains sustenance by draining human mirth.

Set phasers to "Shake 'n Bake".
