Pastoral Musician of the Year

... was given to Marty Haugen by Oregon Catholic Press. I thought the headline was a joke at first, but there really is a Father Funk and he founded the National Association of Pastoral Musicians. No wonder I am often in a funk when hearing their contributions. This award was given at the latest NPM conference which included a multiple seminars on liturgical dance. Oh and here is a shocker:

A 29 Showcase: Practical Gregorian Chant Selections [CANCELLED]
Anthony Sorgie
In light of renewed interest in the liturgical use of chant, join us for an introduction of practical Gregorian selections to consider for your choir. Sponsored by Peter’s Way Tours Inc.

I guess I am more shocked that they had the seminar scheduled than that it was cancelled.

It's too bad the workshop was cancelled. Fr. Sorgie is a good priest of the Archdiocese of NY and a very fine Church musician.

No WAY! OCP picked Marty Haugen?!

Could they pick him for the "Ok, we've heard enough of your music" award, next time?

Oh, wait...it'll have to snow in the desert, first.

Shucks.

Marty Haughen was named OCP's "Pastoral Musician of the Year"?

What year? 1980?

Now is the time for all good men to join the Society for a Moratorium on the Music of Marty Haugen and David Haas!

This is truly the closest I have ever come to spewing coffee all over my computer screen! No Joke!

I wasn't one bit surprised that the chant showcase was cancelled. Had to advertise it at first to make it look good, you see.

This way, Haugen can take the glory!

I was there, and quite disgusted. Joncas won some award, too, if I recall correctly.

Peter Funk is the name of another Benedictine who helps run chant seminars (one that I attended at an NPM regional convention), along with Anthony Ruff, OSB. Ruff recently published a book called "Sacred Music and Liturgical Reform: Treasures and Transformations." It is fantastic; I highly recommend it.

what venom........

frjimt,

Were you around when the "reforms" were shoved down the throats of the poor unsuspecting congregations of the late 60's and early 70's? Did you witness the vitriol and arrogance that were foisted upon those to whom the Tridentine Mass minstered? Why is tolerance and charity only applied to those who want to "wink-wink-nudge-nudge" bend the rules? The venom is the result of years of languishing in the pew, crying out, "How long. Lord? How long?"

Posted by Susanne email at July 26, 2007 12:40 PM

I think that makes it understandable, Susanne, but not RIGHT?

Venom isn't right. But telling the truth is. And the truth is that the faithful have been mistreated. It would be lying to say it had been otherwise.

Now we can look forward to some positive liturgical changes!
