Bishop Tobin on Rudy

Bishop Tobin on My R.S.V.P. to Rudy Giuliani

I probably would have written this article anyhow, so distressed was I. But then I received an invitation to attend a fundraising luncheon for presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani, and that absolutely confirmed my decision.

The fundraiser is scheduled for Providence next week. For $500, I could attend a reception with the former New York City Mayor. For $1,500 I could attend a reception with a photo-op.

The first thought that came to my mind is that I’m not charging enough for my Confirmation photos!

He then goes on to talk about Rudy's very confused position with some questions very to the point and ends with.

Oh well, as you can see by now, I won’t be attending the fundraiser for Rudy Giuliani. If Rudy wants to see me, he’ll have to arrange an appointment at my office. We’ll talk about his position on abortion. And if he wants a photo, it will cost him $1,500 as a donation for the pro-life work of the Church.

Is it me or are a lot of bishops suddenly showing backbone? Was there anything like this even four years ago, say in the run up to the 2004 elections? Maybe Bruskewitz would have been this outspoken. Now it seems like every other bishop is in the news scolding Catholic politicians for their abortion views.

I wasn't paying attention a few years ago so I would really like to hear from someone who knows. Is this a genuinely recent change in episcopal behavior?

I try to avoid partisan politics. Heck, I’m not even a Republican.

This can't be right! Chris Matthews just told us that all the hierarchy is made up of rabid republicans!

He wouldn't have just made that up would he have?

Way to go, Bp. Tobin!

Hey, that's my bishop! He's had backbone ever since he arrived in Providence, BTW. I have a feeling that he was given a sturdy spine when he was knitted together in the womb...:)
Pray for Rhode Island. We don't have this bishop because we deserve him. He's here because we need him and because God is kind and merciful!

You have this bishop because you NEED him!
I'm a bit envious down here on Long Island, we have 2 of the gang of eighteen Congressman who thumbed their nose at the Holy Father here, and the silence from the bishop is deafening!

The bishop needs to worry about lost souls and not illegal immigrants. Probably should spend his time looking for little boys and priests before those little boys file suit.

Take the time to help those who come here legitimately and not as thieves in the night.
