Catholicnews.org

Funny stuff going on over at catholicnews.org. She has come up with some pretty funny satirical news stories and the last two posts were especially good.

What was that doilie the ladies used to wear in Mass called? A mantilla, I think? I'm a post-VII gal, but I do remember long ago when women wore dresses and doilies on their heads and men wore suits and ties, and I'm old enough to remember the Virginia Slims ad which I think applies....

"We've come a long way, baby!"

I remember when girls/women had to have their heads covered to go into a Catholic Church. In the absence of a mantilla, we might use kleenex or notebook paper (or other creative options) when making a quick visit.

Those little "doilies" were called chapel veils. The long, Spanish-looking lace numbers were mantillas. I remember a day when I was feeling quite rebelious in my Catholic junior high school and ditched my chapel veil. Pretty nearly got me expelled.
